Design Speed, Operating Speed, and Posted Speed Survey
Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 1996At some locations, the posted speed limit, based on 85th percentile operating speed, exceeds the roadway's design speed. This situation is a result of the fact that criteria used in highway design incorporate a significant factor of safety, that is, roadways are designed for near worst-case conditions.

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1966
This paper is intended as a status report on high-speed detectors for the visible and near-infrared portion of the optical spectrum. Both vacuum and solid-state detectors are discussed, with the emphasis on those devices which can be used as direct (noncoherent) detectors of weak optical signals modulated at microwave frequencies.

Since their invention in the 1940s, the speed of electronic computers has increased exponentially. Their raw speed is usually measured in MHz or millions of cycles per second. In the last few years, MHz have been replaced by GHz, or thousands of millions of cycles per second. These figures describe what is called the clock speed of the computer.
