Woody and arboreal habitats of the Green Salamander (Aneides aeneus) in the Blue Ridge Mountains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The green salamander (Aneides aeneus) is primarily considered a rock crevice dwelling species. However, many early observations from Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia report A. aeneus taken from woody and arboreal habitats. There have been

Speed of Ascent During Stair Climbing Identifies Operable Lung Resection Candidates [PDF]

open access: yesRespiration, 2012
Background: Preoperative evaluation of lung resection candidates with impaired pulmonary reserves includes measurement of aerobic capacity. Stair climbing is an attractive low-cost alternative to treadmill exercise testing but it lacks standardisation.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Towards statistical analysis of predictive parameters in competitive speed climbing

open access: yesSports Engineering, 2023
AbstractCompetitive sport climbing progressed massively within the last quarter century. Development of technology enabling qualitative and quantitative analysis is required to withstand the challenges for athletes and trainers. This paper deals with the statistical study of a data set generated by the application of several image processing algorithms

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Patterns in hydraulic ripples with binary granular mixtures

open access: yes, 2002
An experimental study of a binary granular mixture submitted to a transient shear flow in a cylindrical container is reported. The formation of ripples with a spiral shape is observed. The appearance of phase segregation in those spiral patterns is shown.
