Shaping of Spherical Joints in Space Structures

International Journal of Space Structures, 1988
This paper discusses the conceptual design of spherical joints in space structures. Known spherical joints were analyzed and six innovative shaping concepts identified. The analysis revealed general tendencies in the shaping of spherical joints over a period of more than 15 years.

Measurement and characterization of precision spherical joints

Precision Engineering, 2006
Abstract Spherical joints based on a ball and socket configuration have been developed for parallel kinematic machines. Four prototypes are implemented using point, rolling, sliding and aerostatic contact mechanisms; each with a magnetic preload between the ball and the socket. A spherical kinematic test mechanism has been constructed to automate the

Temperature Analysis of Pin-Jointed Spherical Domes

International Journal of Space Structures, 1988
The stiffness matrix of a pin-jointed spherical dome is expressed in spherical coordinates and the load vector is derived for uniform change of temperature. This method of representation may be used when improving the best available estimates of the Tammes problem (How must n equal, non-overlapping circles be packed on a sphere so that the angular ...

Contributions of non-spherical hip joint cartilage surface to hip joint contact stress

2011 Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2011
The natural non-spherical incongruent hip joint cartilage surface is normally assumed as spherical in shape, which has been extensively applied in orthopedic clinic, hip joint simulation studies and hip joint prosthesis design. The aim of the study was to investigate the contributions of non-spherical incongruent hip joint cartilage surface to the hip ...

CFRP Spherical Joint for Robotic Limbs

2018
Robotic limbs, especially lower limbs, have been used for decades both for humanoid robots and to restore the motor functions of patients subjected to amputation of one or more limbs. Joints used for those prosthetic devices are mostly cylindrical, therefore with a single rotational degree of freedom, or made with multi-bar linkage mechanism, which ...

VIBRATIONS ON SPHERICAL JOINT IN VEHICLES

2000
The paper deals with the causes and consequences of vibrations occurring during service on spherical joints in vehicles. It explains the main causes of vibrations and their effects on the most fragile joint elements, and shows the damages on the joint surface.
