Cotton facilitates long‐distance seed dispersal by functioning as nest material for birds

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Cotton (Cossypium) fibres, which grow naturally in bolls around the seeds of cotton plants, have been used for centuries to produce fabric. The presumed natural function of cotton is that these lightweight and fluffy fibres may support wind dispersal of the seeds inside.

Rule-Based Control Application on Multimode Cricket Bowling Machine

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrical Engineering and Applied Sciences, 2018
This paper presents the application of rule-based control on the multimode cricket bowling machine to create varying bowling deliveries. Rule-based control on the machine allows an easier imitation of the different deliveries utilized by the real cricket

Growing trees on farms: Navigating the goals and values of farmers

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Agricultural landscapes represent critical contexts for advancing policy objectives related to tree cover expansion. This paper explores how farmers' values influence their willingness or ability to grow trees on farms. Research is based on 49 interviews and two focus groups with farmers in England and draws on two social science research ...

Does the universe in fact contain almost no information? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
At first sight, an accurate description of the state of the universe appears to require a mind-bogglingly large and perhaps even infinite amount of information, even if we restrict our attention to a small subsystem such as a rabbit. In this paper, it is

Corrigendum to “Exploration evoked by the environment is balanced by the need to perform in cricket spin bowling” [Psychology of Sport and Exercise 57 (2021) 102036]

open access: yesPsychology of Sport and Exercise, 2022
An attentive reader alerted us that the repeated measures ANOVA analyses presented on p. 7 are incorrect. The ANOVAs presented in the paper are incorrect because they analysed the participants’ individual observations and not the mean values. This corrigendum is provided to correct and replace the following incorrect results: (p. 7): “3.2. Quantitative

Implementing potential climate‐smart practices through diverse partnerships

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Climate change is one of the greatest threats to society, negatively impacting agriculture and crop yields. Globally, agriculture is also one of the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting sectors. Climate‐smart practices that are developed through diverse partnerships with scientists and practitioners are needed to decrease GHG emissions. We implemented

NowPrecip 2: Precipitation nowcasting in the complex terrain of Switzerland. Part II: Verification

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
In this work we present the verification of the NowPrecip precipitation nowcasting systems (version 1 and version 2). Using 3.5 years of data over the period 2020–2023, their performance is compared with PySTEPS and the ICON numerical weather prediction ensemble by computing deterministic and probabilistic metrics.

Ecological dynamics of spin bowling in cricket: Adapting to environmental constraints

open access: yes, 2023
The problem with traditional conceptions of skill acquisition is that there is an assumption that the performance and the environment in which it takes place are mutually exclusive. Using cricket spin bowling as the primary task, this research used the principles of skill acquisition to demonstrate the unique influence the pitch surface has on shaping ...

Designing Tailored Molecular Cavities Using Calix[5]arenes as Building Blocks

open access: yesThe Chemical Record, EarlyView.
This account focuses on the shape and dimensions of cavities formed by precisely designed molecular frameworks. It highlights our efforts to construct synthetically tailored cavities based on calix[5]arenes. This study examines the shapes and dimensions of cavities defined by well‐designed molecular structures.
