Experimental investigation of single loop thermosyphons utilized in motorized spindle shaft cooling
Applied Thermal Engineering, 2018Abstract In this paper, a shaft cooling structure of a grinding motorized spindle was designed based on loop thermosyphons. The evaporation and condensation sections of the loop thermosyphons were located on the same tube due to the thermal conductivity of the shaft.

The centrifugal force has great influence on characteristics of the turbine shaft. The changes of stress, diameter and natural frequency of the turbine shaft for self-developed micro-spindle for micro-cutting following with the rotational speed were studied by finite element (FE) simulation, which showed that stress, diameter of the turbine shaft and ...

A numerical study on rotating-shaft spindles with nonlinear fluid-dynamic bearings
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2005The purpose of this paper is to present a numerical model predicting the shock response of a rotating-shaft spindle motor with nonlinear fluid-dynamic bearings (FDBs). The paper consists of three parts. The first part is to modify an existing linear spindle vibration model to include arbitrary FDB nonlinearity.

Dynamic Modeling of Aerostatic Spindle With Shaft Tilt Deformation
Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2019Abstract This paper presents a new dynamic model of aerostatic spindle including the journal and thrust bearings. Reynolds equations are used to model the dynamics of a 4-degree-of-freedom (DOF) aerostatic journal bearing and a 3-DOF aerostatic thrust bearing. Finite element model of the spindle shaft is developed based on the Timoshenko

Milling Cutter Wear Monitoring Using Spindle Shaft Vibration
Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 1997With the intent of continuously monitoring cutting tool condition in intermittent machining operations in a benign manner, a noncontacting measurement system was assembled to measure spindle shaft torsional vibration. Spindle vibration was measured using an optical system and analysis of it in the frequency domain resulted in a measure of spectral ...

Liquid-free cooling of motor spindle shafts

Experimental investigation into rotating loop thermosyphons for cooling shafts of motorized spindles
Heat and Mass Transfer, 2020Shaft cooling using loop thermosyphons is an ideal method for cooling motorized spindles. To investigate this application, it was necessary to investigate the heat transfer performance of loop thermosyphons while in a state of rotation. This paper describes cooling a shaft with a set of loop thermosyphons as its cooling structures. These thermosyphons’

AbstractIn this paper, two types of spiral groove bearing (SGB) spindles, a rotating‐shaft spindle and a fixed‐shaft spindle, are analysed, and the dynamic characteristics of these two types of spindles are tested and compared. The effects of lubricants on the dynamic characteristics and power consumption of the spindles are considered.

Vibration of rotating-shaft HDD spindle motors with flexible stationary parts
Digest of the Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference, 2003Demonstrates an accurate mathematical model predicting forced vibration of rotating-shaft hard disk drive spindle motors with flexible stationary parts. The mathematical model consists of three parts: a rotating part, a stationary part, and bearings. The rotating part includes a flexible hub, a flexible shaft press-fit into the hub, and N elastic disks

Modeling and Validation of Spindle Shaft Followed by Goal Driven Optimization
2018The spindle bearing system is critical component in any machining center due to its complexity and it directly affects design or selection of components. Fail-safe design is traditional design philosophy of the machine centers which leads to over-sized machine tool design including spindle bearing system.
