Dynamic characteristics of spiral groove bearing spindles: comparison between rotating‐shaft and fixed‐shaft designs

Tribotest, 2005
AbstractIn this paper, two types of spiral groove bearing (SGB) spindles, a rotating‐shaft spindle and a fixed‐shaft spindle, are analysed, and the dynamic characteristics of these two types of spindles are tested and compared. The effects of lubricants on the dynamic characteristics and power consumption of the spindles are considered.

Vibration of rotating-shaft HDD spindle motors with flexible stationary parts

Digest of the Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference, 2003
Demonstrates an accurate mathematical model predicting forced vibration of rotating-shaft hard disk drive spindle motors with flexible stationary parts. The mathematical model consists of three parts: a rotating part, a stationary part, and bearings. The rotating part includes a flexible hub, a flexible shaft press-fit into the hub, and N elastic disks

Design of carbon fiber composite shafts for high speed air spindles

Composite Structures, 2002
For the stable operation of high speed air spindles, the low rotational inertia and high damping ratio of spindle shafts as well as high fundamental natural frequency are indispensable. Conventional steel spindles are not appropriate for high speed operation because of their high rotational inertia and low damping ratio. In this study, a high-speed air

Stepped spindle motor shaft to reduce disk drive acoustic noise

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998
A spindle motor shaft having variable geometrical features for adjusting the torsion mode frequency of the shaft/stator assembly. The variable geometric features allow the torsion mode frequency to be tuned away from the driving force frequency of the motor.

Experimental investigation into rotating loop thermosyphons for cooling shafts of motorized spindles

Heat and Mass Transfer, 2020
Shaft cooling using loop thermosyphons is an ideal method for cooling motorized spindles. To investigate this application, it was necessary to investigate the heat transfer performance of loop thermosyphons while in a state of rotation. This paper describes cooling a shaft with a set of loop thermosyphons as its cooling structures. These thermosyphons’

Experimental investigation of single loop thermosyphons utilized in motorized spindle shaft cooling

Applied Thermal Engineering, 2018
Abstract In this paper, a shaft cooling structure of a grinding motorized spindle was designed based on loop thermosyphons. The evaporation and condensation sections of the loop thermosyphons were located on the same tube due to the thermal conductivity of the shaft.

Evaluation of R404a single loop thermosyphon for shaft cooling in motorized spindle

Applied Thermal Engineering, 2018
Abstract In this study, a single loop thermosyphon charged with refrigerant R404a was investigated for shaft cooling in a motorized spindle. Tests were performed for a heating power range of 20–200 W, evaporation temperatures between 20 °C and 72 °C, and filling ratio (FR) of 30–80%.

Modeling and Validation of Spindle Shaft Followed by Goal Driven Optimization

2018
The spindle bearing system is critical component in any machining center due to its complexity and it directly affects design or selection of components. Fail-safe design is traditional design philosophy of the machine centers which leads to over-sized machine tool design including spindle bearing system.

Vibration Prediction of a Spindle Shaft and Bearing Fitting Assembly Design using Fuzzy Logic

2020 IEEE 7th International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Applications (ICIEA), 2020
This paper proposes Fuzzy Logic for Assembly parts for making a decision and selecting effective fitting for spindle shaft and bearing for each stage of assembly. Multi-criteria decision making is concerned with interference fits, material hardness, surface roughness and spindle force.

Dynamic characteristics of a HDD spindle system due to imperfect roundness of shaft

2009 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference, 2009
This research proposes a modified Reynolds equation for the coupled journal and thrust FDBs to include the variable film thickness due to the imperfect roundness of a rotating shaft. Finite element method is used to solve the Reynolds equation to determine pressure, reaction force and friction torque.
