Stellar metallicity variations across spiral arms in disk galaxies with multiple populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
This letter studies the formation of azimuthal metallicity variations in the disks of spiral galaxies in the absence of initial radial metallicity gradients.

Near‐Unity Chiral Lasing Enabled by Quasi‐Bound States in the Continuum

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoimprinted chiral array that supports bound states in the continuum is doped with an efficient non‐chiral molecule (Rhodamine‐B) acting as gain medium to produce fully circularly polarized lasing emission. The chiral lasing wavelength can be tuned across the emission band of Rhodamine‐B by adjusting the coating thickness of the TiO2 high refractive ...

Origin and Evolution of Large-scale Magnetic Fields

open access: yes, 2015
Magnetic elds are ubiquitous at all scales in the Universe and have been observed in galaxies and clusters of galaxies via observations of di use radio emission and Faraday Rotation Measures.

Insights into the structure and kinematics of a Milky Way-like galaxy

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Context. Understanding how the large-scale kinematics of the Milky Way (MW) shape the formation and evolution of the interstellar medium remains challenging from an observational perspective, and numerical models that can reproduce the observed structure

High Center‐of‐Mass, Multi‐Legged Soft Robots Powered by Geometrically Encoded Liquid Crystal Elastomer Arc Appendages

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by the octopus and the golden wheel spider, soft robots with liquid crystal elastomer arc fibers as appendages are fabricated to transcend surface constraints through an elevated center of mass and minimal contact footprints. By leveraging curvature‐encoded deformation‐recovery cycles, these robots exhibit contractile, torsional, and flexural ...

Spiral arm formation mechanisms: Spiral Structure in Barred galaxies. Observational constraints to spiral arm formation mechanisms

open access: yes, 2019
A method which we have developed for determining corotation radii, has allowed us to map in detail the radial resonant structures of barred spiral galaxies. Here we have combined this information with new determinations of the bar strength and the pitch angle of the innermost segment of the spiral arms to find relationships between these parameters of ...

Transducers Across Scales and Frequencies: A System‐Level Framework for Multiphysics Integration and Co‐Design

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Transducers convert physical signals into electrical and optical representations, yet each mechanism is bounded by intrinsic trade‐offs across bandwidth, sensitivity, speed, and energy. This review maps transduction mechanisms across physical scale and frequency, showing how heterogeneous integration and multiphysics co‐design transform isolated ...

Distribution Properties of the 6.7 GHz Methanol Masers and Their Surrounding Gases in the Milky Way

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
An updated catalog consisting of 1092 6.7 GHz methanol maser sources is reported in this work. Additionally, the NH _3 (1, 1), NH _3 (2, 2), and NH _3 (3, 3) transitions were observed toward 214 star-forming regions using the Shanghai Tianma radio ...

Arm classification and velocity gradients in spiral galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1991
On the basis of published rotation curves, velocity gradients are compiled for 94 galaxies. A significant correlation is found in this sample of galaxies between their gradients and arm classes (as given by Elmegreen and Elmegreen, 1982); galaxies with steeper curves tend to have a flocculent arm structure, and galaxies with flatter curves tend to have
