The HI Halo of Spiral Galaxies
Astrophysics and Space Science, 2004A deep H I survey with the VLA of the spiral galaxy NGC 2403 has revealed the existence of a thick, low density layer of neutral gas surrounding the thin 'cold' disk. This layer has a mean rotation velocity 25-50 km s(-1) lower than that of the disk and a 10-20 km s(-1) inflow towards the centre of the galaxy.

The Rotation of Spiral Galaxies
Science, 1983There is accumulating evidence that as much as 90 percent of the mass of the universe is nonluminous and is clumped, halo-like, around individual galaxies. The gravitational force of this dark matter is presumed to be responsible for the high rotational velocities of stars and gas in the disks of spiral galaxies.

AbstractThe venerable problem of what causes the spiral features in disk galaxies is nearing a solution. In previous work, we have shown that transient spirals in simulations result from the superposition of a few coherent waves that have many properties of modes.

Dark matter in spiral galaxies
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1986Abstract Mass models of spiral galaxies based on the observed light distribution, assuming constant M /L for bulge and disc, are able to reproduce the observed rotation curves in the inner regions, but fail to do so increasingly towards and beyond the edge of the visible material.

The dynamics of spiral galaxies is a gold-mine of challenging problems for the astrophysicist and the applied mathematician. In Astrophysics, we may ask how these island-universes formed, evolved, and reached their current structure and thus address the problems of the dynamics of the interstellar medium, of star formation, of stellar dynamics, and of ...
