Synthesis and Properties of Benzophenone−Spiropyran and Naphthalene−Spiropyran Conjugates

The Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2006
We have designed and synthesized four compounds integrating luminescent and photochromic components in their molecular skeletons. Two of them combine a nitrospiropyran photochrome with either one or two naphthalene fluorophores and can be prepared in three synthetic steps.

Modulating the Optical Characteristics of Spiropyran@Metal–Organic Framework Composites as a Function of Spiropyran Substitution

Langmuir, 2021
Understanding the interactions between the single components of hybrid systems is essential to drive the development of advanced functional materials. A prerequisite for this is the systematic variation of the building blocks of such compounds. Focusing on spiropyran@metal-organic framework (MOF) composite materials with noncovalently attached ...

Spiropyran dyes

Physical Sciences Reviews, 2021
Abstract This article furnishes an introduction to one of the most well-known classes of photochromic colorant. While the properties of spiropyran dyes inspired pioneering efforts to exploit photochromism for industrial applications, their lack of robustness held them back from commercialization. Nevertheless, this type of dye remains at

Ultrafast Bidirectional Photoswitching of a Spiropyran

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2010
We report on bidirectional photochemical switching of 6,8-dinitro-1',3',3'-trimethylspiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2'-indoline] (6,8-dinitro-BIPS) between the ring-closed spiropyran and the ring-open merocyanine form. This is studied by femtosecond three-color pump-repump-probe experiments. Both ring opening and ring closure are photoinduced. Completion of an

Spiropyrans as molecular optical switches

Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, 2010
Optical microscopes use visible light and an arrangement of lenses to provide us with magnified images of small samples. Combined with efficient fluorescent probes and highly sensitive fluorescence detection techniques they allow the non-invasive 3D study of subcellular structures even in living cells or tissue. However, optical microscopes are subject

Ultrafast Dynamics of a Spiropyran in Water

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2012
The reversible switching of a water-soluble spiropyran compound is recorded over 1 ns by means of femtosecond vis-pump/vis- and IR-probe spectroscopy under aqueous conditions. Our investigations reveal that the photochemical conversion from the closed spiropyran to the open merocyanine takes 1.6 ps whereas the reversed photoreaction is accomplished ...

Spiropyrans: molecules in motion

Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, 2021
This review is devoted to the features of isomerization reactions of indoline spiropyrans and the possibilities for their applications as building blocks in the design of molecular machines and ensembles capable of self-organization. Nanoscale systems functioning on the base of changes in geometric parameters and molecular dipole moment when switching ...

The Photochemistry and Photophysics of Spiropyrans

Russian Chemical Reviews, 1987
The results of studies on the structure and nature of the electronic states of spiropyrans (SP) and the products of their photochromic reactions as well as the mechanism of the dissociation of the Cspiro–O bond and the formation of a coloured form of the SP are surveyed and analysed.

Photochromic coumarin spiropyrans

Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, 1992
New photochromic spiropyrans (SPP) derived from 4-methyl-7-hydroxy-8-formylcoumarin have been synthesized. The effect of the heterene fragment on the spectral and photochromic properties of the SPP was examined. The photoproduct of the benzodithiolane SPP had the absorption with longest wavelength.
