Interactive spline approximation

open access: yes, 1974
The use of spline basis functions in solving least squares approximation problems is investigated. The question as to which are appropriate basis functions to use is discussed along with the reasons why the final choice was made.

Previously undocumented regional variability in crab‐eating macaque skull sexual dimorphism and its implications for biological and morphometric studies

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract In a large sample of adult crab‐eating macaques, we quantified sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and covariance across the whole skull and among anatomical regions of the cranium and mandible. All regions showed significant mean sex differences, but the magnitude of size and shape dimorphism varied substantially.

A class of piecewise cubic interpolatory polynomials

open access: yes, 1979
A new class of C1 piecewise—cubic interpolatory polynomials is defined, by generalizing the definition of cubic X-splines given recently by Clenshaw and Negus (1978).

The Approximation Properties of a Rational Cubic Spline

open access: yes, 2011
This paper deals with the approximation properties of a rational cubic spline with quadratic denominator. The rational cubic spline has two families of parameters and based on function values only.

Computational fluid dynamics simulations of airflow through the nasal passages of rhinolophoid bats

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The nasal passages of bats that emit their echolocation call through their nostrils have adapted for sound emission as well as standard respiratory and olfactory functions. Rhinolophids, hipposiderids and rhinonycterids all use a high duty cycle (HDC) echolocation strategy.

A new approach for lofted B-spline surface approximation to scanned data

open access: yes, 2010
This paper addresses the problem of B-spline surface approximation to rows of points by B-spline surface lofting. Lofting is a well known surface create technique and has been used in CAD and CAGD.

Developmental differences in cortical bone structure in chimpanzee and human femora reflect early locomotor independence in humans

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The cortical bone structure of long bone diaphyses changes throughout growth via skeletal modeling and has important implications for bone strength and structural integrity. Ontogenetic trends in diaphyseal structure have been identified in both chimpanzees and humans but it is not yet clear how these trends compare given notable differences ...

Prophylactic Enoxaparin Reduces Symptomatic Venous Thromboembolism Compared With No Chemoprophylaxis Within 95 Days After Knee Arthroscopy

open access: yesArthroscopy, EarlyView.
Purpose To investigate whether prophylactic use of low‐molecular‐weight heparin (enoxaparin) after knee arthroscopy reduces the incidence of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) compared with no postoperative pharmacological prophylaxis. Methods We conducted a population‐based cohort study using linked national insurance and hospital data from ...

Challenges and Opportunities in Multi‐Method Integrated Geophysical Prospection of Buried Building Remains at the Sanctuary of Olympia

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ancient Olympia was one of the most important sanctuaries and the venue for the Olympic Games in Greek and Roman times. Its remains are located in the Olympia Terrace (Peloponnese, Greece) at the present‐day confluence of the rivers Alpheios and Kladeos at the base of Mount Kronos.
