Pendekatan parametrik mengasumsikan bentuk model sudah ditentukan. Apabila tidak ada informasi apapun tentang bentuk kurva, maka pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan nonparametrik, salah satunya spline truncated. Karena pendekatan tidak tergantung pada asumsi bentuk kurva tertentu, sehingga memberikan fleksibilitas yang lebih besar.
