Spondylitis of Hypoparathyroidism
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1971Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism may present as ankylosing spondylilis such as in the case we have described. Similar cases have been reported in the literature, suggesting more than coincidental relationship. Serum calcium and phosphorus determination are recommended in evaluating an individual with spondylitis who has atypical clinical or roentgenologic

Ankylosing spondylitis occurs chiefly in young men and affects principally the sacroiliac, apophyseal, and costovertebral joints. Physical findings may be minimal, and special tests may be necessary to find objective evidence of the disease. HLA-B27 histocompatibility antigen is present in 90% to 95% of patients.

Infection of the spine is a rare but serious cause of back pain. Conventional radiographs remain the initial screening procedure. Typically two adjacent vertebral bodies and the intervening disk space are affected. Early in the course of the disease, radiographs may be normal or nondiagnostic.

This article provides an overview of ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic condition characterised by abnormal ossification and ankylosis affecting the spine and sacro-iliac joints. It explores the needs of patients with the condition and identifies pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to disease management.

We report a case of salmonella spondylitis in an adolescent without sickle cell disease or any history of salmonella gastroenteritis. The infecting organism (cultured from material aspirated from the bone lesion) was Salmonella enterica serovar Newport. With nonoperative treatment, evolution was favorable.
