Novel nanostructured hematite–spongin composite developed using an extreme biomimetic approach
The marine sponge Hippospongia communis (Demospongiae: Porifera) is a representative of bath sponges, which possess characteristic mineral-free fibrous skeletons made of a structural protein – spongin.

A spongin-boring alpha-proteobacterium is the etiological agent of disease in the Great Barrier Reef sponge Rhopaloeides odorabile [PDF]
High levels of mortality in the Mediterranean bath sponge industry have raised concerns for the future of sponge farms. Healthy sponges feed predominantly on bacteria, and many harbour a wide diversity of inter- and extra-cellular symbiotic bacteria ...

Tunneling nanotubes provide a new route for bovine viral diarrhea virus spreading [PDF]
IntroductionBovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is one of the major pathogens currently endangering the world's cattle industry. It poses serious difficulties in prevention and treatment because it can infect cattle of all ages and the specific mechanism ...

Enigmatic Structural Protein Spongin
In the orders Dendroceratida, Verongida and Dictyoceratida, the characteristic for most Demospongiae siliceous skeleton is replaced by proteinaceous, fibrous like spongin skeleton. These spongin fibers can be anastomosed in order to create a network which provides support for skeleton of the sponge’s cell tissues.

Lysobacter spongiae sp. nov., isolated from spongin
A Gram-negative, motile, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterial strain designated 119BY6-57T was isolated from spongin. The taxonomic position of the novel isolate was confirmed using the polyphasic approach. Strain 119BY6-57T grew well at 25-30°C on marine agar.

Collagen Fibrils, Spongin, Matrix Substances
Collagen fibrillogenesis is a universal process in sponges and in some species represents the secretory process while in others it is overshadowed by mineralization. In some ceractinomorph demosponges, colossal quantities of collagen are elaborated and requirements for precursors are undoubtedly very high. Although a major process, fibrillogenesis is a
