Homologous recombination (HR) in Schizosaccharomyces pombe is essential when mating‐type switching–induced double‐strand breaks (DSBs) form at the mat1 locus. In h90 and h− strains, efficient mat1 DSB formation renders HR indispensable unless suppressors block these breaks.

Spontaneous fission properties and lifetime systematics [PDF]
Half-lives for spontaneous fission of nuclides with even and odd numbers of particles are compared with recent theoretical calculations. A summary of odd particle hindrance factors is given.

Neutron Angular Distribution in Plutonium-240 Spontaneous Fission [PDF]
Nuclear safeguards applications require accurate fission models that exhibit prompt neutron anisotropy. In the laboratory reference frame, an anisotropic neutron angular distribution is observed because prompt fission neutrons carry momentum from fully ...

Arsenite methyltransferase 3 is required for mitochondrial function and hepatic lipid metabolism
AS3MT is a protein that helps the body process arsenic, a naturally occurring toxin found in water and soil. We discovered it also helps cells make and use energy properly. Without AS3MT, cells' mitochondria do not work well, leading to fatty liver and reduced activity. Increasing AS3MT in liver cells restores energy and protects against arsenic damage,

Search for Ra-226 spontaneous fission and systematics of the probabilities of spontaneous fission, alpha decay, and cluster decay [PDF]
A lower limit on the half-life T-1/2 of Ra-226 With respect to spontaneous fission has been measured at a level of 4 x 10(18) yr. The probability of Ra-226 spontaneous fission proved to be about 50 times less than the value expected from the known ...

Mass-asymmetric fission in the 40ca+142Nd reaction
Shell effects play a major role in fission. Mass-asymmetric fission observed in the spontaneous and low energy fission of actinide nuclei was explained by incorporating the fragment shell properties in liquid drop model.
