Insights Into Elevated Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions In Sickle Cell Disease: Comparisons of Hydroxyurea-treated and Non-treated Young Children [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were examined in 15 normal- hearing African-American children between the ages of 6 and 14 years with homozygous sickle cell disease (SCD), who were on a regimen of hydroxyurea (HDU), a drug that reduces ...

Spontaneous and evoked otoacoustic emissions in preterm neonates [PDF]

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, 1992
AbstractSpontaneous (SOEs) and evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOEs) were recorded in a group of preterm neonates (N = 134 ears) in order to study the basic properties of SOEs and EOEs as a function of gestational age. In the study, it was found that: 1. EOEs were recorded in 93% of the tested ears; 2.

Spontaneous emission interference in negative-refractive-index waveguides [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. B 80, 045102 (2009), 2009
The spontaneous decay of a V-type three-level atom placed in a negative-refractive-index waveguide is analyzed. We find that in thin waveguides, highly efficient surface guided modes are supported, which do not occur in positive index waveguides. In addition, at low absorption, the mode density and thus spontaneous emission into particular regular ...

Características das emissões otoacústicas em lactentes expostos à medicação ototóxica Characteristics of otoacoustic emissions in infants exposed to ototoxic drugs

The study of otoacoustic emissions and the suppression of otoacoustic emissions in subjects with tinnitus and normal hearing : an insight to tinnitus etiology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Introduction: analysis of the suppression effect is a simple method to evaluate cochlear status and central auditory mechanisms and, more specifically, the medial olivocochlear system.

Sudden Deafness and Vestibulopathy in a Patient with Antibody Treatment for Metastatic Lung Cancer

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, Volume 134, Issue 10, Page 4347-4350, October 2024.
We describe the case of a patient who presented with sudden onset vertigo and bilateral deafness while under immune checkpoint therapy for metastatic lung cancer. The diagnostic workup confirmed bilateral sensorineural deafness and bilateral loss of vestibular function, while imaging revealed enhancement of the vestibulocochlear nerve.

Nonlinear dynamics of the mammalian inner ear [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
A simple nonlinear transmission-line model of the cochlea with longitudinal coupling is introduced that can reproduce Basilar membrane response and neural tuning in the chinchilla. It is found that the middle ear has little effect on cochlear resonances, and hence conclude that the theory of coherent reflections is not applicable to the model.

Efferent auditory system: its effect on auditory processing

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology, 2008
Summary: Auditory processing depends on afferent and efferent auditory pathways integrity. The efferent auditory system may be assessed in humans by two non-invasive and objective methods: acoustic reflex and otoacoustic emissions suppression.

Audio-vestibular symptoms in systemic autoimmune diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Immune-mediated inner ear disease can be primary, when the autoimmune response is against the inner ear, or secondary. The latter is characterized by the involvement of the ear in the presence of systemic autoimmune conditions. Sensorineural hearing loss

Tinnitus update: what can be done for the ringing?

open access: yesInternal Medicine Journal, Volume 54, Issue 7, Page 1066-1076, July 2024.
Abstract Physicians will frequently encounter patients who report tinnitus. Tinnitus is a symptom whereby there is the perception of sound or sounds in the ear or head in the absence of an external source of sound. Most individuals experiencing tinnitus will have a neutral reaction to the percept, but in a small proportion of patients, tinnitus can be ...
