Professional development needs in nutrition and dietetics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background. Continuing education has long played a role in the maintenance of professional competence of nutrition and dietetics professionals. Due to the lack of published continuing education research in nutrition over the last 15 years, very little is

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Effect of increased venous blood flow with acute passive heating on volume and compliance in the calf vein in young adults

open access: yesPhysiological Reports
Arterial endothelial function—impairment of which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease—increases after acute passive heating; however, whether venous properties (volume and compliance) also increase remains unclear. Moreover, it is unknown whether

Impairments of intestinal arginine and NO metabolisms trigger aging-associated intestinal barrier dysfunction and ‘inflammaging'

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2022
Aging is considered a state of low grade inflammation, occurring in the absence of any overt infection often referred to as ‘inflammaging'. Maintaining intestinal homeostasis may be a target to extend a healthier status in older adults.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Erythropoietin modulates hepatic inflammation, glucose homeostasis, and soluble epoxide hydrolase and epoxides in high‐fat diet‐induced obese mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Erythropoietin administration suppresses hepatic soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) expression, leading to increased CYP‐derived epoxides. This is associated with a shift in hepatic macrophage polarization characterized by reduced M1 markers and increased M2 markers, along with reduced hepatic inflammation, suppressed hepatic lipogenesis, and attenuated ...

Bilateral strength asymmetry in knee extension: a reliability and consistency analysis for scientific and practical applications

open access: yesFrontiers in Sports and Active Living
BackgroundMuscular strength imbalances are associated with musculoskeletal injuries and performance deficits. This study aimed to assess the reliability and consistency of bilateral strength asymmetry (BSA) in quadriceps muscles as determined by ...
