Resistance Spot Welding

2017
In the current chapter we debate a joining process called resistance spot welding which finds many applications ranging from the automobile industry to robotics. In the first part of the chapter we present the construction of a non-local mathematical model illustrating the phase transition occurs during this joining process.

Effect of Spot Weld Indentation on Spot Weld Nugget Characterization

2018 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS), 2018
When using the ultrasonic attenuation to size the nugget in the C-scan image, the contribution of indentation to ultrasonic wave attenuation will affect the accuracy of sizing the nugget. This paper studies the effect of the indentation on the sizing of spot weld nugget.

Avoidance of liquid metal embrittlement during resistance spot welding by heat input dependent hold time adaption

Science and technology of welding and joining, 2020
Liquid metal embrittlement (LME) cracking can occur during resistance spot welding (RSW) in zinc-coated advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) for automotive production. In this study, a methodological variation of hold time is performed to investigate the

Simulating Thermoelectric Effect and Its Impact on Asymmetric Weld Nugget Growth in Aluminum Resistance Spot Welding

, 2020
Resistance spot welding (RSW) of aluminum–aluminum (Al–Al) is known to be very challenging, with the asymmetric growth of the weld nugget often observed.

Testing of spot welds

Ultrasonics, 1965
Abstract With transducers inside the electrodes of a spot welder it is possible to examine each spot weld as it is made. Poor fusion, inclusions and cracks can all be clearly detected and distinguished without any delay to the welding ...

Keyhole laser spot welding

ICALEO 2002: 21st International Congress on Laser Materials Processing and Laser Microfabrication, 2002
Physical mechanisms and quality criteria of keyhole laser spot welding partially differ from continuous laser welding, demanding separate investigations. A survey on progress in laser spot welding will be given, encompassing first welds with a ruby laser in the early sixties, various industrial applications, and high speed X-ray imaging of the keyhole ...

Efficient Spot Welding Sequence Optimization in a Geometry Assurance Digital Twin

, 2020
A digital twin for geometry assurance contains a set of analyses that are performed to steer the real production for securing the geometry of the final assembly. In sheet metal assemblies, spot welding is performed to join the parts together.

Resistance of the Spot Weld

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1940
THE OUTPUT of resistance-welding machines is generally determined by Joule's law W=RI2 where R is the resistance of the heated metal being welded and I is the current flowing during the welding operation. With the majority of machines, welding current is determined by the internal impedance of the machine, the resistance of the weld being but a small ...
