Color discrimination by a bering sea spotted seal, Phoca largha

Vision Research, 1978
Abstract A female spotted seal was trained to discriminate between blue and orange lighted targets. Brightness cues were decoupled from color cues and background light intensity was such that the animal's rods were probably saturated. The performance of the animal indicated that it could reliably distinguish colors.

Investigation of local hot spots in sealing rings with different sealing materials

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2021
The local high temperature in the sealing pair is prone to cause local wear, which easily leads to seal failure. In this paper, a numerical method based on the finite element method is proposed to investigate the local high-temperature hot spot in a sealing ring with different sealing materials.

Pattern of Shore Use by Spotted Seals in the Sea of Japan

Oceanology, 2020
This paper considers the pattern of shore use by seals in relationship with the location of haulout sites, their geomorphological parameters, and the influence of oceanographic conditions. Spotted seals in the southern Sea of Japan, which are known to breed on shore, for pupping and nursing are found to only use spit beaches, barrier spits between two ...

Seals and sound in a changing Arctic: Ongoing psychoacoustic studies of spotted and ringed seals

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2012
Arctic environments are changing rapidly as a result of climate warming and industrialization, and as sea ice recedes, activity associated with transportation and oil and gas production increases. Among the many concerns for ice-living seals in the region is the potential for behavioral or auditory effects resulting from noise exposure. Currently there

Mating behaviour of captive spotted seals (Phoca largha)

Animal Behaviour, 1979
Abstract This study is the first detailed analysis of the underwater mating behaviour of seals. The courtship behaviour of this species of ice-inhabiting phocid is more complex and variable than that of seals in other habitats. We observed underwater mating during April and early May in 1973 to 1977.

Spotted seal hearing impressive in air and water

Journal of Experimental Biology, 2014
![Figure][1] Tunu, one of the spotted seals that participated in the study. Photo credit: Jillian Sills. Bobbing around in the northern Pacific Ocean, spotted seals are most at home in the Arctic water, only pulling themselves onto the sea ice to rest, nurse their young and moult ...

In Vitro Progression of Artificial White Spot Lesions Sealed With an Infiltrant Resin

Operative Dentistry, 2014
SUMMARY This study assessed the ability of an infiltrant resin (Icon, DMG Chemisch-Pharmazeutische Fabrik GmbH, Hamburg, Germany) to prevent artificial lesion progression in vitro when used to impregnate white spot lesions and also assessed the effect of saliva contamination on resin infiltration.
