Spreading Speeds in Slowly Oscillating Environments
Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, 2010In this paper, we derive exact asymptotic estimates of the spreading speeds of solutions of some reaction-diffusion models in periodic environments with very large periods. Contrarily to the other limiting case of rapidly oscillating environments, there was previously no explicit formula in the case of slowly oscillating environments.

Spreading speeds as slowest wave speeds for cooperative systems
Mathematical Biosciences, 2005It is well known that in many scalar models for the spread of a fitter phenotype or species into the territory of a less fit one, the asymptotic spreading speed can be characterized as the lowest speed of a suitable family of traveling waves of the model. Despite a general belief that multi-species (vector) models have the same property, we are unaware

How Phenological Variation Affects Species Spreading Speeds
Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, 2018In this paper, we develop a phenologically explicit reaction-diffusion model to analyze the spatial spread of a univoltine insect species. Our model assumes four explicit life stages: adult, two larval, and pupa, with a fourth, implicit, egg stage modeled as a time delay between oviposition and emergence as a larva.

Spreading control with speed constraints
42nd IEEE International Conference on Decision and Control (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37475), 2004This paper investigates spreading control under speed constraints on the spreads. By an approach, which combines feedback theory and set-valued analysis, spreading control laws under speed constraints are derived by a selection procedure and their optimality with respect to norm is examined.

Anomalous spreading speeds of cooperative recursion systems
Journal of Mathematical Biology, 2007This work presents an example of a cooperative system of truncated linear recursions in which the interaction between species causes one of the species to have an anomalous spreading speed. By this we mean that this species spreads at a speed which is strictly greater than its spreading speed in isolation from the other species and the speeds at which ...

Seasonal influences on population spread and persistence in streams: spreading speeds
Journal of Mathematical Biology, 2011The drift paradox asks how stream-dwelling organisms can persist, without being washed out, when they are continuously subject to the unidirectional stream flow. To date, mathematical analyses of the stream paradox have investigated the interplay of growth, drift and flow needed for species persistence under the assumption that the stream environment ...

Feedback Spreading Control under Speed Constraints
SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 2002The author studies feedback spreading controls for semilinear parabolic partial differential equations. More precisely, after recalling the set-valued analytical basics of the concept of feedback spreading controls, the author introduces the notion of the speed functional as a measure of the spread speed and studies its properties.
