Sprinkles and Spacing [PDF]

open access: yesAnthropology in Action, 2018
AbstractThis article explores women’s reactions to public health nutrition work in Guatemala, looking specifically at multi-micronutrients, or sprinkles. This anthropological research was carried out in two rural communities in Chiquimula, one of which was in the Maya Ch’orti’ region, during the 2017 seasonal period of scarcity.

EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL POTATO PLANT PROTECTION SYSTEM AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF VARIOUS WATER REGIMES DURING SPRINKLING IRRIGATION IN THE LOWER VOLGA REGION

open access: yesМелиорация и гидротехника
Purpose: to develop optimal combinations of parameters of the soil water regime and elements of the plant protection system in conditions of region hydrothermal tension on the basis on a comprehensive assessment of the biological potential of potato ...

Biophysical approaches for studying viral entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses infect all living organisms and have been responsible for major epidemics and pandemics. Their ongoing evolutionary battle with host defenses creates a constant need for improved tools to study viral behavior. Advancing methods to probe viral attachment, fusion, and genome release deepen our understanding of how infections begin and support the

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

The sprinkling problem

open access: yesLinear Algebra and its Applications, 1993
The authors define a sprinkling to be a matrix-valued linear function \(W(x)\) of a vector variable \(x\) with the property that every nonzero entry of \(W(x)\) is an entry of \(x\). The sprinkling problem is to characterize those sprinklings \(W\) for which \(N(W(x)) \leq n(x)\) for all \(x\), where \(N\) denotes the spectral norm for matrices and \(n\
