Assessment of Intraepithelial Lymphocytes Count in Potential Celiac Disease

open access: yesAPMIS, Volume 133, Issue 3, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) count, central for coeliac disease (CD) diagnosis, can be performed either directly on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)–stained paraffined sections or on optimal‐cutting‐temperature‐compound (OCT)‐embedded frozen sections stained by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with anti‐CD3.

A new algorithm for coeliac disease based on the ‘long forgotten’ TCRγδ+ intra‐epithelial lymphocytes detected with an antibody working on FFPE sections

open access: yesHistopathology, Volume 86, Issue 3, Page 397-409, February 2025.
The results of the present study highlight a novel discriminant, TCRγδ+ IELs, for coeliac disease with subtle mucosal abnormalities with a diagnostic performance of 93.4%. We therefore propose a diagnostic algorithm based on simple CD3 and TCR δ immunohistochemistry which can easily be integrated into routine pathology practice.

Intestinal microbial and metabolite profile in infants with small bowel stomas after bowel resection

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Volume 79, Issue 3, Page 705-715, September 2024.
Abstract Background Infants with small bowel stomas (SBstoma) frequently struggle with absorption and rely on parenteral nutrition (PN). Intestinal absorption is difficult to predict based solely on intestinal anatomy. The purpose of this study was to characterize the microbiota and metabolic by‐products within stoma effluent and correlate with ...

Vitamin B12 status and skeletal muscle function among elderly: A literature review and pilot study on the effect of oral vitamin B12 supplementation in improving muscle function

open access: yesAGING MEDICINE, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 480-489, August 2024.
Vitamin B12 may have a crucial role in the maintenance of muscle strength and quality. 3‐month oral vitamin B12 supplementation among subclinical vitamin B12 deficient elderly improved both muscle strength and quality and reached levels similar to the vitamin B12 replete group.

Intractable diarrhea in an infant—autoimmune enteropathy: A case report

open access: yesJPGN Reports, Volume 5, Issue 1, Page 70-73, February 2024.
Abstract Autoimmune enteropathy is a rare cause of chronic intractable diarrhea and is present in <1 in 100,000 infants. We report the case of a 9‐month‐old boy who presented with intractable diarrhea and vomiting. Genetic panel testing revealed a STAT3 heterozygous mutation in exon 6, suggesting infantile‐onset multisystem autoimmune disease‐1.
