Anfang der siebziger Jahre wurde SPSS in den ersten Universitatsrechenzentren in Europa eingesetzt. Damals wurde vorwiegend mit der Programmversion 4 gearbeitet. Als Eingabemedium sowohl fur die SPSS-Anweisungen als auch fur die Daten dienten Lochkarten. Die Syntax von SPSS war auf dieses Eingabemedium ausgerichtet.
