Experimental evidence of solitary wave interaction in Hertzian chains

open access: yes, 2011
We study experimentally the interaction between two solitary waves that approach one to another in a linear chain of spheres interacting via the Hertz potential.

How Aware Are Consumers of Water Used in Agri‐Food Products? Exploring the Misconception Between the Perceived and the Actual Water Footprint

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Understanding the environmental impact of food production is critical to promoting sustainable consumption patterns. This study explores the gap between consumers' perceived water footprint (PWF) and the actual water footprint (AWF) of selected agri‐food products in Italy, including crop‐ and animal‐based products. A survey conducted through a

Statistics on Nonmigrating Diurnal Tides Generated by Tide-Planetary Wave Interaction and Their Relationship to Sudden Stratospheric Warming

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2018
The nonmigrating diurnal tide, DW2, is known to have a source from the stationary planetary wave with wavenumber 1 (SPW1) and the migrating diurnal tide (DW1) interaction.

‘Fixed-axis’ magnetic orientation by an amphibian: non-shoreward-directed compass orientation, misdirected homing or positioning a magnetite-based map detector in a consistent alignment relative to the magnetic field? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Experiments were carried out to investigate the earlier prediction that prolonged exposure to long-wavelength (>500 nm) light would eliminate homing orientation by male Eastern red-spotted newts Notophthalmus viridescens.

Tentative Appraisal of Compatibility of Small-Scale CMB Anisotropy Detections in the Context of COBE-DMR-Normalized Open and Flat $\Lambda$ CDM Cosmogonies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
Goodness-of-fit statistics are used to quantitatively establish the compatibility of CMB anisotropy predictions in a wide range of DMR-normalized, open and spatially-flat $\Lambda$, CDM cosmogonies with the set of all presently available small-scale CMB ...

Zincophilic Porous Carbon Interface with Dendrite‐Free Zinc Deposition via Selective Ion Regulation for Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
A multifunctional zincophilic porous carbon (ZPC) layer is engineered as a protective layer for aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs). The ZPC layer guides Zn2+ diffusion and desolvation through ion adsorption sites. Also, its polar functional groups enhance interfacial adhesion and redox activity.

Improved Text Language Identification for the South African Languages

open access: yes, 2017
Virtual assistants and text chatbots have recently been gaining popularity. Given the short message nature of text-based chat interactions, the language identification systems of these bots might only have 15 or 20 characters to make a prediction ...

Proteomic and Transcriptomic Signatures of Poor Asthma Symptom Control in the U‐BIOPRED Cohort

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
No stable features were identified as associated with asthma symptom control in transcriptomics or sputum proteomics. Higher TWEAKR/TNFRSF12A and MBL/MBP‐C serum levels increased the odds of uncontrolled symptoms, while higher MK08/MAPK8 and CD5L serum levels decreased the odds, after adjustment for clinical variables.

Identification of the mechanisms responsible for anomalies in the tropical lower thermosphere/ionosphere caused by the January 2009 sudden stratospheric warming

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate, 2019
We apply the Entire Atmosphere GLobal (EAGLE) model to investigate the upper atmosphere response to the January 2009 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event.
