Towards 12% stabilised efficiency in single junction polymorphous silicon solar cells: experimental developments and model predictions

open access: yesEPJ Photovoltaics, 2016
We have combined recent experimental developments in our laboratory with modelling to devise ways of maximising the stabilised efficiency of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) PIN solar cells.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Bicruciate-stabilised total knee replacements produce more normal sagittal plane kinematics than posterior-stabilised designs

open access: yes, 2011
Bicruciate-stabilised total knee replacement (TKR) aims to restore normal kinematics by replicating the function of both cruciate ligaments. We performed a prospective, randomised controlled trial in which bicruciate- and posterior-stabilised TKRs were ...

Oxo-Stabilised Phosphonium Ylides as Hydrogen Bond Acceptors

open access: yesInorganics, 2023
Oxo-stabilised phosphonium ylides are found to form crystalline hydrogen-bonded adducts with aromatic carboxylic acids, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction.

Moduli stabilisation on the worldsheet [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2011
We consider compactifications of type II string theory using exact internal CFT's with central charge $c=9+ε$, $|ε| \ll 1$, leading to an effective potential for the dilaton. For $ε>0$ the potential is positive and the dilaton is ultimately driven to weak coupling.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Fat crystal-stabilised double emulsions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This work investigates the effect of fat crystal-stabilised interfaces on the transport of solutes between the two aqueous phases in W1/O/W2 emulsions. The aim is to separate solutes (NaCl or KCl) between the two aqueous phases. Fat crystals are used

Weak interlayers in flexible and semi-flexible road pavements: Part 1

open access: yesJournal of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers, 2012
Weak layers, interlayers, laminations and/or interfaces in the upper structural layers of road pavements are specifically prohibited in most road-building specifications.

Design and analysis of a rotary motion controller

open access: yesCogent Engineering, 2015
This paper presents the design of a rotary motion controller based on the peritrochoid geometry of the rotary (Wankle) engine. It uses an orifice limited flow of incompressible fluid between the chambers of the Wankle-type geometry to control the ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...
