Stacking the Deck [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2007
When the leaders of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) appointed the heavily conflicted 2006 Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) anemia work group, were they oblivious to the possibility that ANY recommendation of the panel would be considered suspect?

Investigating the Cellular Effects of GALC Dosing in Enzyme Replacement Therapy for Krabbe Disease Supports the Role of Nanomedicine

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
A detailed workflow for recombinant GALC production and characterization is presented to support enzyme replacement therapy for Krabbe disease. In vitro assays demonstrate that physiological GALC doses restore enzymatic activity and autophagic flux without affecting cell viability, whereas higher doses impair autophagy and reduce viability.

Managing racial diversity: Positional segregation in South African rugby union in the post-apartheid era

open access: yesCadernos de Estudos Africanos, 2013
This article intends to delineate the evolution of South African rugby union elite teams since the end of apartheid in the 1990s, when racially inclusive sports appeared, particularly the involvement of black players in what was often described as an ...

Polytypism and Unexpected Strong Interlayer Coupling of two-Dimensional Layered ReS2

open access: yes, 2015
The anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) layered materials, with both scientific interest and potential application, have one more dimension to tune the properties than the isotropic 2D materials.

Real-time observations of TRIP-induced ultrahigh strain hardening in a dual-phase CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Strategies involving metastable phases have been the basis of the design of numerous alloys, yet research on metastable high-entropy alloys is still in its infancy.

Orbifolds as stacks?

open access: yesL’Enseignement Mathématique, 2010
The first goal of this survey paper is to argue that if orbifolds are groupoids, then the collection of orbifolds and their maps has to be thought of as a 2-category. Compare this with the classical definition of Satake and Thurston of orbifolds as a 1-category of sets with extra structure and/or with the "modern'' definition of orbifolds as proper ...

Bistable Mechanisms 3D Printing for Mechanically Programmable Vibration Control

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a 3D‐printed bistable mechanism integrated into tuned mass dampers (TMDs) for mechanically adaptive passive vibration suppression. Through optimized geometry, the bistable design provides adaptable vibration reduction across a broad range of scenarios, achieving effective vibration mitigation without complex controls or external ...

A Bayes interpretation of stacking for M-complete and M-open settings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In M-open problems where no true model can be conceptualized, it is common to back off from modeling and merely seek good prediction. Even in M-complete problems, taking a predictive approach can be very useful.
