Elucidating the Three‐Dimensional Structure of Piracetam through Rotational Spectroscopy

open access: yesChemistryOpen, EarlyView.
Neutral molecules of the nootropic drug piracetam are generated by laser ablation and structurally characterized by microwave spectroscopy. Two conformers differing in the exo/endo configuration of the pyrrolidine ring are detected, with exo being the predominant form.

Direct ink writing of piezoresistive isoprene rubber nanocomposites

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Use of carbon nanoparticles as conductive fillers in an isoprene rubber matrix for piezoresistive sensors fabricated via direct ink writing. Abstract Despite the growing interest in flexible electronics and wearable sensors, research in piezoresistive polymer nanocomposites has stagnated in consideration of the polymer matrices, particularly in ...

Decadal Variability of Differential Frost Heave on Incipient Sorted Patterned Ground in the Southern Japanese Alps

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Differential frost heave between fine (earthy) and coarse (gravelly) domains was monitored over 10 years (2013–2023) on a mountain‐top flat ground subjected to both frequent diurnal and deep seasonal freezing. Monitoring objects include, ground heave, soil temperature down to 55 cm, soil moisture, air temperature, rainfall, and snow depth. The

How safe are peat‐free growing media? An exploration of plant pathogen risks to the horticultural industry and recommendations for risk mitigation

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The UK's horticultural industry is shifting from reliance on unsustainable peat‐based growing media to products that contain alternative constituents, including coir, bark, wood fibre and composted green waste. Some peat‐alternatives carry an elevated risk of harbouring plant pathogens, including the potential to introduce novel pathogens from overseas,

Effect of Nanoparticle Size on Cysteine‐Gold Surface Interactions

open access: yesParticle &Particle Systems Characterization, EarlyView.
Stronger and/or more frequent interactions for smaller (5 nm) than larger (20 nm) gold nanoparticles with L‐Cysteine. Surface gold interactions with functional groups: Thiol > amino >> carboxyl. Cysteine increased the agglomeration of the gold nanoparticles in solution but stabilized the nanospecific properties (hindered aggregation) of the smallest (5

Improving pressure relief device (PRD) inspection intervals through critical industrial accident analysis and field investigation in Korea

open access: yesProcess Safety Progress, EarlyView.
Abstract In Korea, the inspection and maintenance intervals for pressure relief devices (PRDs) are determined by the installation's purpose and the substances being handled. The law mandates inspection frequencies ranging from one to four years, depending on the associated economic and safety risks.

“Green” Aqueous Synthesis, Structural, and Optical Properties of Quaternary Cu2ZnSnS4 and Cu2NiSnS4 Nanocrystals

open access: yesphysica status solidi (b), EarlyView.
Novel Cu–Ni–Sn–S nanocrystals (NCs) stabilized with thioglycolic acid are synthesized in aqueous solutions. The structural and optical properties of Cu–Ni–Sn–S NCs are examined in colloidal solutions and thin films and compared to those of Cu–Zn–Sn–S NCs. The absorption coefficient is α > 104 cm−1 at 400 nm with an estimated Eg≈2.2 eV.

Differences in triggering conditions between embedded and isolated convection initiation during a Meiyu season in China

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
During the summer monsoon, a long‐lasting stratiform rainfall system (SRS) hovers over China's Yangtze–Huai River Basin (YHRB), generating two distinct convective environments that are either influenced by or independent of the SRS. Correspondingly, both embedded and isolated convection initiation (CI) occur with different spatiotemporal ...
