Our objectives were to determine responses to selection for crushing strength and the associated changes in yield, stalk strength, field stalk lodging, flowering dates, and soluble stalk solids. The MoSQA and MoSQB maize (Zea mays L.) synthetics that had undergone five cycles of recurrent selection for high and low stalk crushing strength were used ...

Mechanical strength testing of stalk materials and compacting energy evaluation
Industrial Crops and Products, 2000Abstract The great potential of cereal lignocelluloses for use as energy or as an industrial raw material source determines the necessity to investigate the mechanical properties of stalks, as the main parts of any herbaceous material. Annual world production of cereal straw is approximately of the same amount (around 2 billion tons) as wood material

Comparison of Methods for Evaluating Stalk Strength of Sorghum1
Crop Science, 1978Stalk breakage prior to harvest is a cause of grain loss in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and is deterrent to the use of taller, higher yielding hybrids. Laboratory methods of evaluating stalk strength in sorghum were assessed by comparing them with field stalk breakage for the purpose of developing a procedure useful in breeding programs.
