Electromechanical rotary actuator operates over wide temperature range [PDF]

open access: yes, 1969
Electromechanical rotary actuator, which operates over wide temperature range, contains a spring stop which has been calculated to limit internal deceleration loads to a magnitude equal to stall torque.

Functional morphology of the pharyngeal teeth of the ocean sunfish, Mola mola

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Many fish use a set of pharyngeal jaws in their throat to aid in prey capture and processing, particularly of large or complex prey. In this study—combining dissection, CT scanning, histology, and performance testing—we demonstrate a novel use of pharyngeal teeth in the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), a species for which pharyngeal jaw anatomy had ...

Helmeted hornbill cranial kinesis: Balancing mobility and stability in a high‐impact joint

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Prokinesis—in which a craniofacial joint allows the rostrum to move relative to the braincase—is thought to confer diverse advantages in birds, mostly for feeding. A craniofacial joint would, however, be a weak link if cranial stability is important. Paradoxically, we have identified a craniofacial joint in helmeted hornbills (Rhinoplax vigil),

Estimation and rapid identification of later stages during embryonic development of the oviparous lizard Sceloporus aeneus (Squamata: Phrynosomatidae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Stages of embryonic development for reptiles have been presented in tables that may include all or part of embryonic development. When oviposition occurs in some lizards, embryos are already in the later stages of development; likewise, the size of the eggs increases as incubation time progresses.

Investigation on predicting the stall limit of compressor at low rotating speed

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering
In order to realize fast and accurate prediction of the stall limit of compressor, a study on predicting the stall limit of compressor at low rotating speed is conducted with throughflow calculation and maximum static pressure rise coefficient.

Multi‐method analysis for the three‐dimensional reconstruction of muscle fascicles from DiceCT datasets

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Muscle architecture is a major determinant of muscle performance and, in mammalian lineages, has been correlated with both feeding ecology and locomotor behaviors. Over the past decade, contrast‐enhanced micro‐CT (DiceCT) has emerged as an alternative to traditional dissection‐based measurement.

Optimal stalling while bargaining [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Why do people stall while bargaining? Why are people keen to conclude a deal quickly, only to subsequently allow delay before the pie is realised? We propose that the reason is not fully explained by discount rates in combination with agents being engaged in a signalling equilibrium with asymmetric information.
