The Wright Brothers: First Aeronautical Engineers and Test Pilots [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Sir George Cayley invented the conventional configuration of the airplane at the turn of the 19th century. Otto Lilienthal realized that building a successful aircraft meant learning how to fly; he became the first hang glider pilot and also the first ...

Performance Enhancement of a Transonic Axial Flow Compressor with Circumferential Casing Grooves to Improve the Stall Margin

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics, 2020
The stability range of the gas turbine engine compressors is being challenged in the modern days due to the intention of increasing per stage maximum loading. Casing treatment has been widely adopted as a realistic passive flow control means to improve the stall margin with a slight decrease of efficiency at the same time by various grooves of which ...

Stall Margin Improvement of an Axial Flow Fan with End Wall Injection and Suction.

open access: yesTRANSACTIONS OF THE JAPAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS Series B, 1999
The experimental studies are conducted to reveal the mechanism of stall margin improvement of an axial flow fan by injection or suction from the end wall. In case of injection, the largest improvement is obtained by the injection at about 0.14∼0.21 times axial chord length downstream from leading edge.

Stall margin improvement in a low-speed axial compressor rotor using a blockage-optimised single circumferential casing groove

open access: yesProceedings of Global Power & Propulsion Society, 2020
The stall margin of tip-critical axial compressors can be improved by using circumferential casing grooves. From previous studies, in the literature, the stall margin improvement due to the casing grooves can be attributed to the reduction of the near casing blockage.

Influence of slotted casing treatment with surface roughness and dimples on the performance of an axial flow fan

open access: yesCogent Engineering
A numerical analysis is conducted to assess the impact of slotted casing treatments, dimples, and surface roughness on the performance of an axial flow fan. Five configurations were evaluated: baseline (without any flow control), axial slots, axial slots

A Novel Control Scheme for Aircraft Engine Based on Sliding Mode Control With Acceleration/Deceleration Limiter

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
To provide the desired thrust and prevent the engine from exceeding any safety or operational limits, a min–max selector with linear limiters is widely employed in current aircraft engine control logic.

Control of High-Load Compressor Stator Corner Flow by Blade Slotting

open access: yesInternational Journal of Aerospace Engineering
Flow separation often occurs in the stator corner of a compressor, especially in a highly loaded compressor. Therefore, there are multiple methods for flow control, such as blade slotting, which uses the pressure difference between the pressure surface ...
