An Alternative to the Cathead and Rope for the Standard Penetration Test

Energy Transfer in Standard Penetration Test

An expression is derived for the fraction of the kinetic energy transferred from the hammer to the drill rod in the SPT which reflects the energy loss attributable to drill rod length. The expression is used to study the effects of rod size, and the potential effect of reducing the hammer weight and increasing the fall height correspondingly.

Simplified Shockwave Analysis of the Standard Penetration Test

AbstractThe one-dimensional wave equation is used to develop a simplified analysis of the standard penetration test (SPT), including the phenomenon of hammer bounce. The analysis identifies the main dimensionless variables involved. Results suggest that a large part of soil resistance is due to damping rather than soil strength.
