The Dynamic Penetration Test: A Standard that is not Standardized
Géotechnique, 1970Synopsis The Paper presents a description and a discussion of the technique of making the so-called standard penetration test as used in North and South America. Dynamic penetration tests such as the SPT are used widely in an effort to get results that can be interpreted by engineers on a universal basis.

This chapter provides a detailed description of the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) procedure and corrections to be applied to the SPT N value and hammer energy. Correlations of SPT N value with relative density, peak drained friction angle and modulus of elasticity of sand are discussed in detail.

An Alternative to the Cathead and Rope for the Standard Penetration Test
Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1978Abstract Previous studies by the authors have found that a cathead and rope when used to perform standard penetration tests (SPT) have resulted in energies reaching the striker plate or anvil substantially less than those resulting from a complete or 100% free fall.

Experience on a standard penetration test
2021The standard penetration test can perform the same function as exploration as well as survey and test. During the more than recent ten years, many departments in China have been engaged in studying on this subject, they have not only achieved good experience on application of S.P.T.

Field Testing: The Standard Penetration Test
Geological Society, London, Engineering Geology Special Publications, 1986AbstractThis introductory lecture discusses the international use of the standard penetration test (SPT) and presents the proposals for International Reference Test Procedures. The application of the SPT as a means of assessing the strength and stiffness of weak rocks is mentioned together with the reliance upon the test at the present time for ...

Energy Efficiency for Standard Penetration Tests
Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2005The need for standardization of the measured blow count number Nspt into a normalized reference energy value is now fully recognized. The present paper extends the existing theoretical approach using the wave propagation theory as framework and introduces an analysis for large displacements enabling the influence of rod length in the measured Nspt ...

Energy Transfer in Standard Penetration Test
Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1982An expression is derived for the fraction of the kinetic energy transferred from the hammer to the drill rod in the SPT which reflects the energy loss attributable to drill rod length. The expression is used to study the effects of rod size, and the potential effect of reducing the hammer weight and increasing the fall height correspondingly.

Field Correlation of Cone and Standard Penetration Tests
Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1986In recent years, attempts have been made to correlate standard penetration blow counts with cone penetration tip resistance readings in order to utilize the large data base and experience of standa...

Simplified Shockwave Analysis of the Standard Penetration Test
International Journal of Geomechanics, 2014AbstractThe one-dimensional wave equation is used to develop a simplified analysis of the standard penetration test (SPT), including the phenomenon of hammer bounce. The analysis identifies the main dimensionless variables involved. Results suggest that a large part of soil resistance is due to damping rather than soil strength.
