Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

The untapped potential of vaginal microbiome diagnostics for improving women’s health

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology
Microbiome research has expanded rapidly over the past 15 years; however, the primary focus has been on the gut microbiome. Although understudied, the vaginal microbiome holds significant potential to improve women’s health.

The value-added statement: An appeal for standardisation [PDF]

open access: yes
Owing to the absence of accounting standards for the preparation of a value-added statement (VAS), a large variety of methods are used in financial statements.

Standardization and Control for Confounding in Observational Studies: A Historical Perspective

open access: yes, 2014
Control for confounders in observational studies was generally handled through stratification and standardization until the 1960s. Standardization typically reweights the stratum-specific rates so that exposure categories become comparable.

Overview of molecular signatures of senescence and associated resources: pros and cons

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cells can enter a stress response state termed cellular senescence that is involved in various diseases and aging. Detecting these cells is challenging due to the lack of universal biomarkers. This review presents the current state of senescence identification, from biomarkers to molecular signatures, compares tools and approaches, and highlights ...

Hands‐on protocol for preparing water‐soluble fractions from agri‐food samples for NMR‐based metabolomics analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol outlines a workflow for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)‐based metabolomics in the agri‐food sector. Using two case studies—strawberry leaves (solid matrix) and wine (liquid matrix)—it details the procedures for sample preparation, data acquisition, and processing.

Towards standardisation of no fault found taxonomy

open access: yes, 2012
There is a phenomenon which exists in complex engineered systems, most notably those which are electrical or electronic which is the inability to diagnose faults reported during operation.

Antibiofilm activity of a chionodracine‐derived peptide by NMR‐based metabolomics of cell‐free supernatant of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical strains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KHS‐Cnd peptide is able to impair biofilm formation and disaggregate mature biofilms in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. Differences in extracellular metabolites reflect changes in biofilm metabolism due to KHS‐Cnd treatment. Among the differentially represented extracellular metabolites upon KHS‐Cnd treatment, the significantly altered ...

Engineering tandem VHHs to target different epitopes to enhance antibody‐dependent cell‐mediated cytotoxicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Tandem VHH targeting distinct EGFR epitopes were engineered into a monovalent bispecific antibody (7D12‐EGA1‐Fc) with more potent ADCC without increasing affinity to EGFR. Structural modeling of 7D12‐EGA1‐Fc showed cross‐linking of separate EGFR domains to enhance CD16a engagement on NK cells.

Evaluation of image analysis tools for the measurement of cellular morphology

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology
Morphological cell analysis offers a means of identification and classification of key morphological measurement parameters linked to cell bioactivity and cell health and, as such, it is of great interest to academic and industrial research sectors ...
