STAPES SURGERY IN OSTEOGENESIS IMPERFECTA

Between 1968 and 1986 stapes surgery has been performed in the Nijmegen University Department of Otorhinolaryngology in 11 patients (14 ears) with osteogenesis imperfecta. Detailed information about pre- and postoperative hearing levels, findings at surgery, and the follow-up period are presented. In most cases the stapedectomy has been successful.

Stapes Surgery – Outcome Evaluation

23 patients were studied preoperatively, 17 at 2 months and 11 at 6 months. Using cutoff at 30 dB HL (air-conduction), 2-month success rate was 5 of 17 patients (PTA: 0.5-1-2-4 kHz), 7 of 17 (PTA: 0.5-1-2-3 kHz), 9 of 17 (PTA: 0.5-1-2 kHz) and 15 of 17 (SRT: Speech recognition threshold). At 6 months, success rate was 6 of 11 patients (PTA: 0.5-1-2 kHz)
