A variety of different implants are available today for use by the otologic surgeon. All prostheses are well tolerated, and the risks of complication as a result of their implantation are comparable. The most commonly used prostheses are the wire-Teflon piston and the stainless steel bucket handle.

Stapes Surgery – Outcome Evaluation
200723 patients were studied preoperatively, 17 at 2 months and 11 at 6 months. Using cutoff at 30 dB HL (air-conduction), 2-month success rate was 5 of 17 patients (PTA: 0.5-1-2-4 kHz), 7 of 17 (PTA: 0.5-1-2-3 kHz), 9 of 17 (PTA: 0.5-1-2 kHz) and 15 of 17 (SRT: Speech recognition threshold). At 6 months, success rate was 6 of 11 patients (PTA: 0.5-1-2 kHz)

STAPES SURGERY IN OSTEOGENESIS IMPERFECTA
Otology & Neurotology, 1989Between 1968 and 1986 stapes surgery has been performed in the Nijmegen University Department of Otorhinolaryngology in 11 patients (14 ears) with osteogenesis imperfecta. Detailed information about pre- and postoperative hearing levels, findings at surgery, and the follow-up period are presented. In most cases the stapedectomy has been successful.
