This paper is a review of concepts and methods presented as a tribute to a great pioneer and teacher, Harold Frederic Schuknecht. His book entitled Stapedectomy, published in 1971, is based on past experience of '6,200 stapedectomy operations over a period of 13 years' and on experience gained from teaching the procedure to numerous residents and ...

Stapes Surgery – Outcome Evaluation
200723 patients were studied preoperatively, 17 at 2 months and 11 at 6 months. Using cutoff at 30 dB HL (air-conduction), 2-month success rate was 5 of 17 patients (PTA: 0.5-1-2-4 kHz), 7 of 17 (PTA: 0.5-1-2-3 kHz), 9 of 17 (PTA: 0.5-1-2 kHz) and 15 of 17 (SRT: Speech recognition threshold). At 6 months, success rate was 6 of 11 patients (PTA: 0.5-1-2 kHz)

Perhaps the best way to describe the principles on which stapes surgery rests is the term "dynamic." Modern stapes surgery is not a standardized or fixed procedure; it is rather in process, constantly developing, growing, and expanding. Our measure of advance is the degree of success we meet in restoring and maintaining hearing by the best possible ...

STAPES SURGERY IN OSTEOGENESIS IMPERFECTA
Otology & Neurotology, 1989Between 1968 and 1986 stapes surgery has been performed in the Nijmegen University Department of Otorhinolaryngology in 11 patients (14 ears) with osteogenesis imperfecta. Detailed information about pre- and postoperative hearing levels, findings at surgery, and the follow-up period are presented. In most cases the stapedectomy has been successful.

Revision stapes surgery requires intense patient counseling about possible outcome and potential hazards due to the surgery, and written consent is needed. Most frequent causes of the postoperative hearing loss and vertigo are displacement of the piston, incus necrosis, immobilization of the ossicular chain, obliteration of the oval window, too long ...

Outcomes Following Endoscopic Stapes Surgery
Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, 2016There are limited studies describing the surgical and hearing outcomes following endoscopic stapes surgeries, despite the burgeoning interest and excitement in endoscopic ear surgery. Current studies have demonstrated that endoscopic stapes surgery is safe and has similar audiologic outcomes when compared with microscopic stapes procedures.

Delayed Meningitis Following Stapes Surgery
Archives of Neurology, 1979Perilymphatic fistulae, developing even years after stapedectomy, open a communication between the perilymph and middle ear. These fistulae constitute a potential pathway for flora of the middle ear to invade the subarachnoid space by way of the cochlear aqueduct. Our patient developed pneumococcal meningitis 14 months after stapedectomy.

Endoscopic versus microscopic stapes surgery
Auris Nasus Larynx, 2017The aim of this study to compare the outcomes and complications of endoscopic stapes surgery versus microscopic stapes surgery. This study involved patients who underwent stapedotomy at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine, Cukurova University between January 2012 and July 2014. The patients were divided into two groups.

Thirty years of stapes surgery
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 1988The modern stapedectomy with prosthesis insertion and living oval window seal, like the modern cataract extraction with lens replacement, is now performed, very much the same, throughout the world. I have reviewed the evolution of stapes surgery during these last thirty years and tried to gain some agreement for several important facts about ...
