Lower synovial leucocyte count and polymorphonuclear percentage reliably differentiate periprosthetic joint infection after unicompartmental knee arthroplasty

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, Volume 34, Issue 4, Page 1310-1317, April 2026.
Abstract Purpose This study aimed to determine diagnostic thresholds for synovial fluid leucocyte count and polymorphonuclear (PMN) percentage to identify the diagnosis periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in patients with failed unicompartmental knee arthroplasties (UKAs).

A Pilot Metagenomic Study Demonstrating Virtual Reality Head Mounted Displays Utilized in Medical Education Are Reservoirs of Viable Pathogenic Microbes

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 2, April 2026.
Metagenomic analysis identified 27 pathogenic bacteria including 4 "ESKAPE" pathogens (Enterobacter sp., Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella spp., and Escherichia coli) and numerous organisms associated with ocular infections. A broad range of antimicrobial resistance genes were identified conveying resistance to Methicillin, Aminoglycosides, Macrolides,

The Evaluation of Machine Learning Models Using Matrix‐Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time‐of‐Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI–TOF–MS) Spectra for the Prediction of Antibiotic Resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 2, April 2026.
Machine learning models developed from matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry spectra can rapidly predict antimicrobial resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae. By transforming routine spectral data into accurate resistance profiles within minutes, this approach could reduce diagnostic delays and support earlier ...

Microbial Life Inside Posidonia Seeds: Beneficial Endophytes and Implications for Marine Plant Health

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 2, April 2026.
Seagrass Posidonia oceanica seeds host diverse bacterial and fungal endophytes with plant‐growth–promoting traits, including nitrogen fixation and hormone production. These microbes may be vertically transmitted and support seedling establishment, offering insights for marine plant conservation and biotechnological applications.

Of Commensals and Opportunists: Genomics of Coagulase‐Negative Staphylococci During Sequential Ear and Eye Infections in a Healthy Adult

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 2, April 2026.
The genomes of coagulase‐negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated during sequential ear and eye infections in a healthy adult are analyzed. We highlight the identification of a community‐acquired S. capitis subsp. urealyticus ST1 lineage carrying a mosaic SCCmec IV element, linking common skin commensals to multidrug‐resistant strains associated with ...

Dispersion Inhibits Thermal Mitigation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilms on Self‐Heating Surfaces

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 2, April 2026.
Thermal mitigation of biofilm infections is promising in the lab. Clinical translation requires heat to be delivered from the implant surface while leaving surrounding tissue cooler. This study shows that bacteria may rapidly and reversibly disperse into these cooler areas, reducing treatment efficacy.
