The History of Starburst Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Dusty galaxies with luminosities in excess of 10^11 solar luminosities have been detected out to redshifts of about unity by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), and to higher redshifts using millimetre(mm)- and submm-wave cameras on ground-based telescopes.

Chimneys in the starburst galaxy M 82 [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1999
A new radio image of the core of the starburst galaxy M82 is presented. A pair of probable galactic chimneys are evident. Such structures have been conjectured to result when a giant shell of ionized gas breaks out of the dense plane of a galaxy and ejects hot gas into the halo.

Massive post-starburst galaxies at z > 1 are compact proto-spheroids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We investigate the relationship between the quenching of star formation and the structural transformation of massive galaxies, using a large sample of photometrically-selected poststarburst galaxies in the UKIDSS UDS field.

Estimation of the detected background by the future gamma ray transient mission CAMELOT

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, Volume 340, Issue 7, Page 666-673, August 2019., 2019
Abstract This study presents a background estimation for the CubeSats Applied for MEasuring and LOcalising Transients (CAMELOT), which is a proposed fleet of nanosatellites for the all‐sky monitoring and timing‐based localization of gamma ray transients with precise localization capability at low Earth orbits.

Multi-line modelling in nearby galaxies: The link between dense gas and star formation in different environments [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2022
The J=1–0 lines of HCN and HCO+ have become the default tracers of dense molecular gas in external galaxies. To study the relation between HCN and HCO+ emission and density, we have mapped their J=3–2 lines with the ALMA Compact Array (ACA) in the nearby

Starbursts in barred spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics Supplement Series, 1998
This paper presents optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of 105 barred Markarian IRAS galaxies. These observations are used to determine the spectral type of emission-line regions in the nucleus and along the bar of the galaxies, in order to define a homogeneous sample of Starburst Nucleus Galaxies (SBNGs). Our selection criteria have been very

Star Formation Law at Sub‐kpc Scale in the Elliptical Galaxy Centaurus A as Seen by ALMA

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
We present an extensive analysis of the relationship between star formation rate surface density (∑SFR) and molecular gas surface density (∑H2) at sub‐kpc scale in the elliptical galaxy Centaurus A (also known as NGC 5128) at the distance 3.8 Mpc. 12CO (J = 2‐1) data from Atacama Large Millimetre/Sub‐Millimetre Array SV data with very high resolution ...

The Colors and Sizes of Recently Quenched Galaxies: A Result of Compact Starburst before Quenching [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 2019
We analyze the colors and sizes of 32 quiescent (UVJ-selected) galaxies with strong Balmer absorption (EW(Hδ) ≥ 4 Å) at z ∼ 0.8 drawn from DR2 of the LEGA-C survey to test the hypothesis that these galaxies experienced compact, central starbursts before ...

The Observer’s Guide to the Gamma‐Ray Burst Supernova Connection

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
We present a detailed report of the connection between long‐duration gamma‐ray bursts (GRBs) and their accompanying supernovae (SNe). The discussion presented here places emphasis on how observations, and the modelling of observations, have constrained what we know about GRB‐SNe.

An Extremely Compact, Low-mass Galaxy on its Way to Quiescence at z = 5.2

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
We report the discovery of a low-mass z = 5.200 ± 0.002 galaxy that is in the process of ceasing its star formation. The galaxy, MACS0417-z5BBG, is multiply imaged with magnification factors ∼40 by the galaxy cluster MACS J0417.5-1154, observed as part ...
