Atmospheres of Central Stars [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1978
This review begins with a brief summary of atmospheric models that are of possible relevance to the central stars of planetary nebulae, and then discusses the extent to which these models accord with the observations of both nebulae and central stars. Particular attention is given to the significance of the very high Zanstra temperature implied by the ...

Neutron Star Atmosphere–Ocean Dynamics

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Abstract We analyze the structure and dynamics of the plasma atmospheres and Coulomb-liquid oceans on neutron stars. Salient dynamical parameters are identified and their values estimated for the governing set of magnetohydrodynamics equations.

Magnetic neutron star atmospheres

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1988
L'alteration de l'espace de phase des electrons dans de forts champs magnetiques resulte en conductivites thermiques, opacites radiatives et pressions electroniques qui different des quantites non magnetiques correspondantes.

Line-blanketed model atmospheres for WR stars [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2002
We describe the treatment of iron group line-blanketing in non-LTE model atmospheres for WR stars. As an example, a blanketed model for the early-type WC star WR 111 is compared to its un-blanketed counter- part. Blanketing aects the ionization structure and the emergent flux distribution of our models.

3. Wolf-Rayet star atmospheres [PDF]

open access: yesTransactions of the International Astronomical Union, 1985
Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are the helium-burning remnants of massive stars (initial mass ≲30 M©), which have lost their outer hydrogen-rich layers through the processes of Roche lobe overflow to a companion or mass loss by a strong stellar wind. The characteristic emission-line spectrum which defines the WR spectral type is produced by a stellar wind that ...

Model Atmospheres for Low-Field Neutron Stars [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1996
We compute model atmospheres and emergent spectra for low field (B<10^10 G) neutron stars, using new opacity and equation of state data from the OPAL project. These computations, incorporating improved treatments of flux transport and convective stability, provide spectra for hydrogen, solar abundance and iron atmospheres.

Model atmospheres for neutron stars [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1992
While the presence of an atmosphere on a neutron star will not significantly modify its total thermal emission, it may change the emission in the sensitivity bands of detectors such as Einstein or ROSAT so that the inferred surface temperature (from a blackbody curve) may be quite different from the actual surface temperature.

On the outer atmospheres of hybrid stars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1985
Deep exposures with the IUE satellite have been obtained in order to search for high-temperature emission from stars with cool winds. Iota Aur and Theta Her are confirmed as hybrid stars, and an additional hybrid object, Gamma Aql, has been discovered.
