Contribution of Mixed Starter Cultures to Flavor Profile of Suanyu – A Traditional Chinese Low‐Salt Fermented Whole Fish

open access: yes, 2017
The effect of mixed starter cultures isolated from Suanyu on flavor compounds development has been researched. Microorganism, pH, TA, sugars, nonvolatile organic acids and volatile compounds were analyzed in Suanyu with or without starters. In inoculated

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

SENSORY EVALUATION OF PROBIOTIC YOGURT INOCULATED WITH DIFFERENT STARTER CULTURES

open access: yesJournal of Agriculture and Plant Sciences, 2019
Today's consumer choice is mostly based on products that provide health benefits, such as probiotic yogurt. The consumer does not tolerate consistency defects, poor firmness or gel viscosity, and also its acid taste, so our goal was to make comparison ...

Recurrent cancer‐associated ERBB4 mutations are transforming and confer resistance to targeted therapies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We show that the majority of the 18 analyzed recurrent cancer‐associated ERBB4 mutations are transforming. The most potent mutations are activating, co‐operate with other ERBB receptors, and are sensitive to pan‐ERBB inhibitors. Activating ERBB4 mutations also promote therapy resistance in EGFR‐mutant lung cancer.

Slow food for lactobacilli: characterization of 1,2-propanediol metabolism in Levilactobacillus parabrevis FUA3697 in sourdough

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology
Some lactobacilli convert lactate to acetate and 1,2-propanediol in the stationary phase of growth, but the key enzyme of the pathway, lactaldehyde dehydrogenase, has not been characterized in any of the Lactobacillales.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

Combining antibody conjugates with cytotoxic and immune‐stimulating payloads maximizes anti‐cancer activity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Methods to improve antibody–drug conjugate (ADC) treatment durability in cancer therapy are needed. We utilized ADCs and immune‐stimulating antibody conjugates (ISACs), which are made from two non‐competitive antibodies, to enhance the entry of toxic payloads into cancer cells and deliver immunostimulatory agents into immune cells.

USE OF STARTER CULTURES TO IMPROVE PORTUGUESE TRADITIONAL SAUSAGES [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In Mediterranean countries, such as Portugal, traditional dry-fermented sausages are highly appreciated. They are often still being manufactured in small processing units, according to traditional procedures.

Why Are Weissella spp. Not Used as Commercial Starter Cultures for Food Fermentation

open access: yes, 2017
Among other fermentation processes, lactic acid fermentation is a valuable process which enhances the safety, nutritional and sensory properties of food. The use of starters is recommended compared to spontaneous fermentation, from a safety point of view

Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...
