Thalamic control of cortical states

Nature Neuroscience, 2012
We investigated the impact of thalamus on ongoing cortical activity in the awake, behaving mouse. We demonstrate that the desynchronized cortical state during active behavior is driven by a centrally generated increase in thalamic action potential firing, which can also be mimicked by optogenetic stimulation of the thalamus.

State Controller and State Observer

1989
The design of the controllers described in the previous chapters was based on input/output models of the processes in form of difference equations or transfer functions, according Fig. 3.16a. Based on these models, input/output controllers could be designed either by parameter-optimization, chapter 5 or by structure-optimization, chapter 6 and 7.

Extremal States and Extremal Controls

SIAM Journal on Control, 1967
Summary: The article introduces the notion of an extremal state of a system which consists of a vector space, a topology in the space, a set of cones and a state set. The state is a point in this state set such that each ray from this .point in a direction contained within a certain cone contains no points of the state set near the original point ...

State Control and State Propaganda

2001
In some countries, a journalist’s main anxiety is that his or her expenses claim will be queried. But in other parts of the world, journalists have much more to fear. In Algeria, journalists risk their freedom and even their lives to report stories. ‘Journalists are assassinated or face government censorship,’ according to Omar Belhouchet, an Algerian ...

State Controls

2014
Abstract Forced migration and refugees are intertwined with the nation state and its borders. This chapter examines the relationship between the nation state, borders, refugees, and citizenship. It looks at asylum challenges to the nation state and considers borders and refugees in historical context.

The neurobiology and control of anxious states

Progress in Neurobiology, 2003
Fear is an adaptive component of the acute "stress" response to potentially-dangerous (external and internal) stimuli which threaten to perturb homeostasis. However, when disproportional in intensity, chronic and/or irreversible, or not associated with any genuine risk, it may be symptomatic of a debilitating anxious state: for example, social phobia ...

The identification and control of metabolic states

Behavioral Science, 1970
The following paper demonstrates a series of metabolic transitions of cells and tissues and their effects upon the oxidation-reduction state of pyridine nucleotide measured in vivo by a new technique. We have employed a stereotyped set of transitions to segregate the varied responses of different parts of the metabolic chain under appropriate ...

Adaptive State-Feedback Controller

2019
In this chapter, we present the book’s first adaptive stabilizing controllers for \( 2 \times 2 \) systems. These are state-feedback solutions requiring full state measurements. The first result on adaptive control of \( 2 \times 2 \) systems is given in the back-to-back papers Anfinsen and Aamo (2016a, b), for a system in the form ( 7.1), but with ...

Point Control with State Constraints

SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 1982
Controllability results are presented for pseudoparabolic problems with spacial domains in $\mathbb{R}^p $ with $p = 1,2$ or 3, as well as compatibility conditions for state constraints of noncontrollable problems. A concrete problem is considered and a regularity result is given for the optimal control.
