Bioreactor state estimation and control

Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 2003
Advanced control methods have been effectively employed for industrial chemical processing for decades. Only recently, however, have model-based strategies been implemented for biological processes. Some notable advances include the enhancement of metabolic flux models to describe the dynamic behavior observed in biochemical reactors.

Thalamic control of cortical states

Nature Neuroscience, 2012
We investigated the impact of thalamus on ongoing cortical activity in the awake, behaving mouse. We demonstrate that the desynchronized cortical state during active behavior is driven by a centrally generated increase in thalamic action potential firing, which can also be mimicked by optogenetic stimulation of the thalamus.

State Controller and State Observer

1989
The design of the controllers described in the previous chapters was based on input/output models of the processes in form of difference equations or transfer functions, according Fig. 3.16a. Based on these models, input/output controllers could be designed either by parameter-optimization, chapter 5 or by structure-optimization, chapter 6 and 7.

Extremal States and Extremal Controls

SIAM Journal on Control, 1967
Summary: The article introduces the notion of an extremal state of a system which consists of a vector space, a topology in the space, a set of cones and a state set. The state is a point in this state set such that each ray from this .point in a direction contained within a certain cone contains no points of the state set near the original point ...
