Experience with Supplementary Damping Signals for Generator Static Excitation Systems
IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1973Virtually all hydraulic generating units installed in Ontario Hydro since 1964 have been equipped with static excitation systems, necessitating supplementary stabilizing signals to suppress power oscillations. This paper reviews the experience gained with alternative types of stabilizing systems at these stations and discusses advantages and ...

Virtual Instrumentation use in static excitation systems
2012 XXth International Conference on Electrical Machines, 2012In the paper is presented a Virtual Instrumentations System developed for the control and dynamic behavior study of a hydro aggregate with synchronous generator with salient poles, having static excitation. The purpose of the work was the achievement of an experimental model of hydro-plant on LabVIEW environment based, that allow to implement various ...

Stabilization of statically unstable systems by parametric excitation
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2009A linear vibrational system with multiple degrees of freedom subjected to parametric excitation is considered. It is assumed that the system is statically unstable but close to a critical point, the excitation amplitude and damping are small, and the excitation frequency is arbitrary.

Adaptive and robust controls for static excitation systems
COMPEL - The international journal for computation and mathematics in electrical and electronic engineering, 2015Purpose – Oscillations and related stability problems of synchronous generators are harmful and can lead to power outage. Studies have shown that currently available commercial applications of power system stabilizers (PSSs) do not ensure damping of modern generators operating in contemporary power systems at peak performances.

Alternate solutions to replacing aged static exciter systems
Conference Record of 2008 54th Annual Pulp and Paper Industry Technical Conference, 2008Over the years, many rotating exciters have been replaced for static exciters on synchronous machines. As these replacement static exciters age, much of the analog hardware becomes obsolete and can no longer be supported by the manufacturer, again forcing the replacement of the entire excitation system.
