Modeling with structures in statistical machine translation [PDF]
Proceedings of the 17th international conference on Computational linguistics -, 1998 Most statistical machine translation systems employ a word-based alignment model. In this paper we demonstrate that word-based alignment is a major cause of translation errors. We propose a new alignment model based on shallow phrase structures, and the structures can be automatically acquired from parallel corpus.

Proceedings of the 42nd Annual Meeting on Association for Computational Linguistics - ACL '04, 2004 In an ordinary syntactic parser, the input is a string, and the grammar ranges over strings. This paper explores generalizations of ordinary parsing algorithms that allow the input to consist of string tuples and/or the grammar to range over string tuples. Such algorithms can infer the synchronous structures hidden in parallel texts.
