Topological Constraints in Directed Polymer Melts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Polymers in a melt may be subject to topological constraints, as in the example of unlinked polymer rings. How to do statistical mechanics in the presence of such constraints remains a fundamental open problem.

Transverse fluctuations of grafted polymers

open access: yes, 2003
We study the statistical mechanics of grafted polymers of arbitrary stiffness in a two-dimensional embedding space with Monte Carlo simulations. The probability distribution function of the free end is found to be highly anisotropic and non-Gaussian for ...

Review on Crystallization Strategies for Polymer Single Crystals

open access: yesCrystals
Polymer physics has evolved significantly over the past century, transitioning from the early recognition of the chain structure of polymers to a mature field integrating principles from statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, and condensed matter physics.

A generalized theory of semiflexible polymers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
DNA bending on length scales shorter than a persistence length plays an integral role in the translation of genetic information from DNA to cellular function. Quantitative experimental studies of these biological systems have led to a renewed interest in

Megasupramolecules for safer, cleaner fuel by end association of long telechelic polymers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We used statistical mechanics to design polymers that defy conventional wisdom by self-assembling into “megasupramolecules” (≥5000 kg/mol) at low concentration (≤0.3 weight percent).

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

Survey of classical density functionals for modelling hydrogen physisorption at 77 K [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This work surveys techniques based on classical density functionals for modeling the quantum dispersion of physisorbed hydrogen at 77 K. Two such techniques are examined in detail.

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.

Potential energy landscape formalism for quantum molecular liquids

open access: yesCommunications Chemistry
The potential energy landscape (PEL) formalism is a powerful tool within statistical mechanics to study the thermodynamic properties of classical low-temperature liquids and glasses.
