A molecular motion-based approach to entropy and application to phase transitions and colligative properties

open access: yesChemistry Teacher International
Freezing point depression and boiling point elevation are colligative properties that are taught in many undergraduate science curricula, often by a discussion of the change in chemical potential of the solution, or by referring to interactions between ...

Rényi Divergences, Bures Geometry and Quantum Statistical Thermodynamics

open access: yesEntropy, 2016
The Bures geometry of quantum statistical thermodynamics at thermal equilibrium is investigated by introducing the connections between the Bures angle and the Rényi 1/2-divergence.

Robust Electrocaloric Performance Enabled by Highly‐Polar Frustrated Nanodomains in NaNbO3‐Based Ferrodistortive Relaxor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
P4bm framework in NaNbO3‐Ba(Ti, Hf)O3 ferrodistortive relaxor entails short‐range and highly‐polar ferrodistortive orders. The abundant highly‐polar orders facilitate to increase entropy change, and robust octahedral oxygen tilt enables to impede thermal perturbations.

Historical Foundation and Practical Guideline for Ferroelectric Switching Kinetic Studies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The P and U pulses in the conventional PUND measurements are not identical because of the interplay between switching current and the measurement circuit components. This circuit effect can lead to a shift in polarization transients and misinterpreted physics in the switching kinetics.

Statistical Entropy in General Equilibrium Theory [PDF]

open access: yes
This essay seeks to develop an integrated account of the workings of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics as a theory of economic equilibrium. It begins with a probabilistic description of general systems (made out of numerous elements), based on the

Informational statistical thermodynamics and thermal laser stereolithography

open access: yes, 2015
We consider the nonequilibrium thermodynamic aspects of the techno-industrial process of thermal laser stereolithography. The conditions necessary for a satisfactory process of rapid prototyping to follow are characterized and discussed. We show that the

Optical Signature of Moiré Superlattices Formed by Twisted SrTiO3 Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We discover optical signatures from bonded interfaces in twisted SrTiO3 moiré superlattices, including low‐frequency Raman vibrational modes and strong second‐harmonic generation, consistent with strong interlayer coupling inferred from cross‐sectional electron microscopy and ab initio calculations. ABSTRACT Moiré superlattices formed at the interfaces

The Legendre Transform in Non-Additive Thermodynamics and Complexity

open access: yes, 2017
We present an argument which purports to show that the use of the standard Legendre transform in non-additive Statistical Mechanics is not appropriate.
