Convention Center Steel Truss Collapse

Forensic Engineering 2009, 2009
Bow truss 13 failed during construction of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in February 2002. Bow truss 13 was designed to withstand the gravity loads and horizontal tension loads from the roof suspension system. The truss itself required stabilization during erection proceedings to prevent it from toppling over.

STRUCTURAL EFFICIENCY OF STEEL COMBINED TRUSSES

Theory and Building Practice, 2022
In this article on increasing the efficiency of steel combined structures, the tasks of rational design, regulation and control of structural parameters of elements, the use of steels with increased mechanical properties are considered. It is shown that for a six-span stiffening girder of a combined truss with elastic supports, which operates under a ...

Truss Analogy for Steel Moment Connections

Engineering Journal, 1997
Unprecedented widespread failure of welded moment connections in steel frames caused by the 1994 Northridge and the 1995 Kobe earthquakes have alarmed the engineering communities throughout the world. Beam-to-column connections in steel frames have been traditionally designed by using classical Euler-Bernoulli beam theory which leads to assumptions ...

Behavior of steel-concrete composite trusses

Pollack Periodica, 2013
Steel-concrete composite trusses as structure systems are not used very often in Europe. One of the reasons may be that the design specifications of composite truss, included in the American standards are not covered in the European standards (Eurocodes). In this study, a finite element model was developed to analyze the behavior of the composite truss.

Deconstruction Monitoring of a Steel Truss Bridge

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2017
A research study was performed on a steel through-truss bridge more than 80 years of age that was being taken out of service. The main objective of the project was to learn as much as possible about the bridge and to further the state of knowledge about the behavior of steel truss bridges.

INCREASING THE STRUCTURE RESILIENCE OF STEEL TRUSSES

Theory and Building Practice
This article examines approaches to improving the robustness and resilience of steel trusses under static and dynamic loads. Particular attention is paid to the advantages of statically indeterminate systems, redistribution of internal forces, and the use of plastic hinges and damping devices.

Composite steel and concrete bridge trusses

Engineering Structures, 2011
Abstract Distribution of longitudinal shear along an interface between steel and concrete parts of various composite truss bridges from elastic phase up to plastic collapse is presented. With respect to the authors’ previous experimental research reported in references, the numerical analysis and the Eurocode approach concerning distribution of the ...

Buckling contribution to the analysis of steel trusses

Computers & Structures, 1986
Abstract This research work deals with the stability phenomena when included in the analysis of semirigid steel trusses. Different rigidities are treated varying from the flexible connection to the fully rigid connection. This research has shown that a certain gain in the weight of steel can be obtained when we use semirigid connections. In this case,

Tubular Steel Trusses with Cropped Webs

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1985
Experimental investigations of the force‐deformation behavior of cropped‐web tubular Pratt type truss joints and specimens representing truss compression webs are described. Dimensionless empirical expressions are presented for estimating the strength and flexibility of square‐chord and roundchord joints with end‐cropped webs.

Rehabilitation of Steel Truss Bridges in Ontario

1990
The paper deals with the rehabilitation of truss bridges, that often involves strengthening as well. The key question, whether to rehabilitate or replace a bridge is complex.
