Experimental Steering Feel Performance Measures
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2004<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper discusses techniques for estimating steering feel performance measures for on-center and off-center driving. Weave tests at different speeds are used to get on-center performances for a 1994 Ford Taurus, a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu, and a 1997 Jeep Cherokee.

Artificial Steering Feel Design for Steer-by-wire Vehicles
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2013Abstract Drivers use steering feel to obtain information about the road and tire dynamics that aids them in driving tasks like curve negotiation. Steer-by-wire vehicles, due to the mechanical decoupling of the front tires and handwheel, do not have any inherent steering feel and, as a result, drivers lose this important source of driving feedback ...

Steering Wheel Torque Control of Steer-by-Wire System for Steering Feel
SAE Technical Paper Series, 2017<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper proposes a reference steering wheel torque map and a torque tracking algorithm via steer-by-wire to achieve the targeted steering feel. The reference steering wheel torque map is designed using the measurement data of rack force and steering characteristic of a target ...

Enhancement of Steering and Safety Feeling in a Steer-by-Wire Application
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2010A conventional way to enhance the steering features (hence optimize the vehicle dynamics) and steering feeling has been realized with EPS (Electric Power Steering) Systems. Another milestone of steering systems is the steer-by-wire steering system, which has no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and tires. Steer-by-wire systems offer many

Steering feel improvement by mathematical modeling of the Electric Power Steering system
Mechatronics, 2021Abstract Currently, the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system is an essential component of the vehicle because it provides assistive steering torque to the driver. To ensure a faster steering response, the position of the EPS in some vehicles is moved closer to the tire rather than the steering wheel.

Steering Feel Design for Steer-by-Wire System on Electric Vehicles
2019 Chinese Control Conference (CCC), 2019In this paper, the problem of hand-wheel force feedback to obtain the tire-to-ground contact information for steer-by-wire (SBW) system is studied. The torque generated by the upper motor is composed of road-to-tire contact torque, known as self-aligning torque (SAT), returnability torque and inherent system torque.

Automotive Power Steering ‘Feel’
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1981This paper discusses what is meant by ‘feel’, particularly but not exclusively under high speed driving conditions, what is required to provide a satisfactory ‘feel’, and to discuss how it may be possible to do this. It mainly, but not exclusively, considers motor cars and is basically confined to the modern power steering rotary valve which uses ...

Steering Feel of Lane Keeping Assist Systems
2021Contemporary partially automated passenger cars assist the driver with the aid of longitudinal and lateral control systems without claiming the entire driving authority. The driver has the possibility to regain full control over the vehicle and relies on consistent feedback of the vehicle’s driving state through haptic, optic, acoustic and kinesthetic ...

Steer-Restoring Torque Controlled Driving Simulator for Developing Steering Road Feel
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1991<div class="htmlview paragraph">A driving simulator system for developing steering road feel has been developed. A new steering gear box or an electronic steering system is installed on the simulator and its road feel and control algorithm are developed according to the characteristics of any vehicle which has been programed into the engineering ...
