Review of Catenary Icing on High‐Speed Railways: Characteristics, Impact and Countermeasures

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The pantograph–catenary system (PCS) is the only path for electrified railway trains to acquire energy. Catenary icing during winter is a common natural phenomenon, which usually leads to the deterioration of the current quality and severely affects the operational safety of trains.

An induction heating system for in situ X‐ray diffraction imaging: design, simulation and application to dislocation dynamics in semiconductors

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
This work presents a compact induction heating system for time‐resolved in situ X‐ray diffraction imaging. The system enables contact‐free volumetric heating up to approximately 1600°C and provides flexible operation in different operating modes. Its performance is demonstrated through representative diffraction imaging experiments. We present a compact

Air attenuation of high power XFEL beams

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
The transmission of air, which is used to contain X‐ray beams for radiation safety, is observed to significantly increase with X‐ray power. The Linac Coherent Light Source II, a high‐repetition‐rate X‐ray free‐electron laser (FEL), produces high average power as well as high peak power.

The Feasibility of Household Food Waste Reduction in Finland: Insights From Five Consumer Profiles

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We apply a household production framework to analyse how changes in cooking skills, waste‐abatement costs and wage rates influence the food waste behaviour of five consumer profiles in Finland. We find that achieving a given reduction in food waste through skill‐enhancing interventions induces larger behavioural adjustments than equivalent ...

Crisis, temporality and governmental policy agendas: The cases of Finland and Sweden

open access: yesScandinavian Political Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract Crises transform the temporal orientation of political decision‐making. They demand immediate and decisive action and thus convert time into a means of political control. In these circumstances, assessing the long‐term consequences of proposed policies with respect to welfare, sustainability or justice also becomes demanding.

‘Everything is a signal’: speaking circuits and noisy signs in the making of language‐oriented AI « Tout est signal » : circuits parlants et signes bruyants dans la création de l'IA orientée langage

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
Contemporary artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are often presumed to be capable of revealing unmediated truths about the world, including the truths language might hold, echoing the long‐standing assertion that language's primary function is to directly translate reality.
