The Roles of Contrasting Host Types on the Environmental Abundance of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, an Emerging Zoonotic Pathogen

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
In this study, we analysed data collected at 40 sites in the Northwest of Scotland (from 2018 to 2020) to quantify the relative contributions of hypothesised pathogen transmission hosts (deer and sheep) and non‐transmission hosts (birds and rodents) on the environmental abundance of ecotypes I and II of Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Our results add to our

Climate Change Impact on the Potential Distribution and Invasion Risk of Tetramorium caldarium (Roger, 1857): A Species Distribution Modeling Approach Using MaxEnt

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
We employed maximum entropy species distribution modeling to assess current and future suitable habitat for Tetramorium caldarium, a pantropical invasive ant species, using 346 occurrence records and bioclimatic variables projected under two climate scenarios (RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5) for 2050 and 2070. The model demonstrated excellent performance (AUC = 0.

Development of a SNP Amplicon Panel for Invasive Deer Faecal Pellets and the Effects of Environmental Exposure on Genotyping Success

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 9, September 2026.
We developed a SNP panel for non‐invasive genetic monitoring of introduced sambar deer which enables the integration of faecal‐derived genotypes with existing data. Our degradation study found that exposed faecal samples were viable up to 4 days, with ~200 SNPs successfully genotyped, while protected samples were still viable after 14 days.

Complementary but Not Interchangeable: A Comparison of eDNA and Bulk Sample Metabarcoding for the Assessment of Groundwater Invertebrate Communities

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 5, September‐October 2026.
Bulk‐ and eDNA‐metabarcoding were compared across 50 groundwater sites (monitoring wells, springs, hydrants) to assess invertebrate communities. Both recovered different community structures with limited overlap (13.8% OTUs); eDNA was dominated by non‐stygobionts, and bulk samples by stygobionts.

Demystifying Spatial Confounding—A Unified Analytical Framework for the Bias in Covariate Effect Estimates

open access: yesEnvironmetrics, Volume 37, Issue 6, September 2026.
ABSTRACT In spatial regression models, unmeasured spatial variables, represented by spatial random effects, are typically not independent of observed covariates and can induce significant bias in covariate effect estimates. This fundamental problem, known as spatial confounding, has been extensively studied, but sometimes with puzzling and seemingly ...

Stationary Subspace Analysis for Spatial Data

open access: yesEnvironmetrics, Volume 37, Issue 6, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Stationary subspace analysis (SSA) is a blind source separation framework that decomposes linearly mixed multivariate data into stationary and nonstationary components. We extend SSA to spatially indexed data by introducing spatial stationary subspace analysis (spSSA), which explicitly accounts for spatial dependence.

Beach Gold and Heavy Mineral Concentrates on Tiwai Spit Gravel Strand Plain, Southland, New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 3, September 2026.
The Holocene Tiwai Spit on Foveaux Strait is a 12 km by 2 km gravel‐dominated strand plain, ∼10 m above present sea level. Gravel clasts are dominated by well‐rounded quartz cobbles, pebbles and granules derived from Otago Schist 200 km to the north in evolving river drainage systems during late Cenozoic.
