On the homology groups of Stein spaces and Runge pairs

The following generalization of a result of Andreotti-Narasimhan is proved: Let X be a Stein space of dimension n and \(Y\subset X\) an open Runge subset. Then \(H_ r(X,Y;{\mathbb{Z}})=0\) for \(r>n\) and \(H_ n(X,Y;{\mathbb{Z}})\) is torsion free.
