On the average Steiner distance of graphs with prescribed properties

open access: yesDiscrete Applied Mathematics, 1997
The Steiner distance of a set \(S\) of vertices in a connected graph \(G\), \(d_G(S)\), is the number of edges in a smallest Steiner tree for \(S\). The average Steiner distance \(\mu _n(G)\) of \(G\) is the average of the Steiner distances of all \(n\)-subsets of \(V(G)\).

Historical birth records from 1896 to 1944 from the Basel maternity hospital, Switzerland, reveal significant obstetric selection pressures

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality have declined dramatically during the last century. Historical data are therefore important sources to study the evolutionary selection pressures related to childbirth and how they have fluctuated over time.

Mathematical programming modeling for joint order batching, sequencing and picker routing problems in manual order picking systems

open access: yesJournal of King Saud University: Engineering Sciences, 2020
This article aims to introduce mathematical programming models for the joint order batching and picker routing problem (JOBPRP) and the joint order batching, sequencing and routing problem (JOBSPRP).

Fluctuating Number of Energy Levels in Mixed-Type Lemon Billiards

open access: yesPhysics, 2021
In this paper, the fluctuation properties of the number of energy levels (mode fluctuation) are studied in the mixed-type lemon billiards at high lying energies.

Human evolution and the obstetrical dilemma: The pelvic floor hypothesis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Human childbirth is mechanically difficult because a large‐headed, broad‐shouldered fetus must pass through a comparatively narrow, twisted bony birth canal. Traditional explanations of this “obstetrical dilemma” emphasize the role of bipedal locomotion in inhibiting the evolution of a wider, more spacious pelvis.

Geometric Models of Local Optimization of Highway Networks that Improve the Configuration of Tracing in Functional Zones [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
The article discusses the improvement of methods for discrete local optimization of highway tracing in the context of planning urban transport networks. Tracing and building the optimal configuration of the highway network is one of the key tasks in city

Analysis of some statistics for increasing tree families [PDF]

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 2004
This paper deals with statistics concerning distances between randomly chosen nodes in varieties of increasing trees. Increasing trees are labelled rooted trees where labels along any branch from the root go in increasing order.

Osteohistological evidence for terrestrial adaptation and an extended growth period in mekosuchine crocodylians and its potential role in their extinction

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The Australasian crocodylian fossil record is dominated by the extinct endemic clade Mekosuchinae, with known members spanning the Eocene‐to‐Holocene. This diverse clade exhibited high morphological disparity, from early members superficially similar to Crocodylus, to more terrestrial forms later in the clade's evolutionary history.

Between soft power and suspicion: Chinese international students as diasporic actors in U.S.‐China geopolitical tensions

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This study examines the under‐theorized political role and identity of Chinese international students, who emerge as significant actors caught between U.S. soft power ambitions and rising geopolitical suspicion. Amid escalating U.S.‐China tensions, these students are forced to confront environments shaped by competing geopolitical discourses ...
